The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Bible

Welcome to our blog!

In this article, we will briefly discuss the mention of Sayyidna Muhammad al-Mustafa ﷺ in the Book of Isaiah :

God The Exalted ﷻ says :

Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet (sent to) the unlettered, whom they find written about in what they have of the Torah and the Gospel.

~Surah al-A’raf 7:157

Now, let us visit the Old Testament of the Bible, in the book of Isaiah, Chapter 42

1) Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

~Isaiah 42:1 KJV

• Here God talks about a Prophet whom He will send who shall bring judgement to the Gentiles, The Christians says it’s about Jesus ﷺ but it couldn’t be as Jesus was sent to the tribes of the Israelites and not the gentiles rather Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent amongst the Non-Jews :

But he (Jesus) answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

~Matthew 15:24 KJV

2) He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

~Isaiah 42:2 KJV

A’isha narrated :

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was neither obscene, nor used to shout in the markets

al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyah 332

3) He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.

~Isaiah 42:4 ESV

This comes true to the 12th successor of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who shares the same name as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Imam Ali narrated :

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Allah would raise up a man from my family (Imam Mahdi) who would fill this earth with justice as it has been filled with oppression.

~Sunan Abi Dawood 4283

4) And give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;

~Isaiah 42:6 KJV

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a light to the gentiles and all nations :

And (God sent Muhammad ﷺ as) one who invites to God, by His permission, and an illuminating light.

Surah al-Ahzab 33:46

Further :

5) To open the blind eyes….But those who trust in idols, who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’ will be turned back in utter shame.

~Isaiah 42:7 KJV and 42:17 NIV

These two verses respectively talk about two things: 1) The told Prophet shall open the blind eyes. 2) He shall be sent to those who worship idols.

This verse couldn’t imply to Jesus ﷺ as He was sent to the tribes of Israel who were already monotheists and a chain of Prophets were sent to them :

He (Jesus) answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”

~Matthew 15:24 NIV

Rather it’s talking about Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who was sent to an idolatrous community and to whom no other Prophets were sent before i.e they were blind before about the laws but Muhammad ﷺ opened their eyes :

It is God who has sent among the unlettered community a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book (The laws) and wisdom although they were before in open misguidance.

~Surah al-Jumu’ah 62:2

6) See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.”
Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth,

~Isaiah 42:9-10 NIV

In this verse God talks the past laws will be abolished and a new law will be declared and new song (law) will be recited.

This could not be Jesus ﷺ as Jesus of the Bible affirmed that He has not brought a new law but affirms the law of Prophet Moses ع :

Jesus ﷺ said : “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law (of Moses) or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

~Matthew 5:17 NIV

While the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said

If Moses ع was alive, he would’ve no option but to follow me.

~Mishkat al-Masabih, 177

The new is the Qur’an and Qur’an literally means ‘To recite’ like a melody, it was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ abolishing some of the former law and bringing a new :

And We have revealed to you (O Muhammad), the Qur’an in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the previous scripture and as a guideline over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed.

~Surah al-Ma’dah 5:48

The location of the Prophet :

7) Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops.

~Isaiah 42:11 NIV

In this verse, two locations are mentioned –
1) Where Kedar and his sons lived. 2) The people of Mount Sela.

Let us check in the Bible where Kedar lived :

“These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam”

~Genesis 25:13 NIV

Ishmael the son of Abraham abided in the valley of Bakka (Mecca) in the Arabian Peninsula and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was from the descendants of Kedar :

Muhammad ﷺ son of Abd-Allah son of Abd al-Muttalib son of Hashim son of Abd-Manaf son of Qusayy son of Kilab son of Murrah son of Lavi son of Ghalib son of Fahar son of Malik son of al-Nudr son of Kinanah son of Khuzaimah son of Madrakah son of Ilyas son of Madar son of Nazar son of Ma’ad son of Adnan son of Add son of al-Yasi’ son of al-Hameesa son of Salaman son of al-Bant son of Hamal son of Kedar son of Ishmael son of Abraham

~Bihar al-Anwar vol 15:107.

Then is the mention of the mountain Sela :

Sela is a mountain in Madinah where the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ frequently visited and asked God for rain on behalf of the people :

Anas bin Malik narrated :

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised both his hands and said, ‘O Allah! Bless us with and I swear by God, there were no clouds in the sky and there was no house or building between us and the mountain of Sela. Then a big cloud of rain like a shield appeared from behind the mountain.

~Sahih al-Bukhari 1014

Here is a Wikipedia link for Mount Sela :

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sela_(Saudi_Arabia)

Here is a location to it on Google Maps :

https://maps.app.goo.gl/fgFpjY8NjcCH9Pji8

• The Christians say this is Mount Sela in Jordan but it could not be as God is talking about a mountain near to the inhabitants of Kedar and not the Israelites.

8) The Lord (The Prophet) will march out like a champion, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.

~Isaiah 42:13 NIV

This verse indicates that the mentioned Prophet shall participate in wars and shall overcome his enemies, this could not be Jesus ﷺ of the Bible as according to the Christians, Jesus was not only a pacifist but also was killed at the hands of his enemies :

Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword.”

~Matthew 26:52 ESV

Rather the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ conducted wars and overcame his enemies :

At-Taubah 9:73

O Prophet (Muhammad ﷺ) fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them.

And when His ﷺ conquests completed and He ﷺ was victorious in all His ﷺ campaign, God revealed :

The victory of Allah has come and the conquest.

~Surah al-Nasr 110:1

Thank you for reading! May Allah grant us intense love for His beloved Prophet.
