1) Part One : Hadith of Safeenah

Hafidh al-Bazzar mentioned –

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ اﻟﺴﻜﻦ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻧﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺼﻤﺪ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻧﺎ ﺃﺑﻲ، ﻭﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺣﻤﺎﺩ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻠﻤﺔ، ﻋﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﺑﻦ ﺟﻤﻬﺎﻥ، ﻋﻦ ﺳﻔﻴﻨﺔ، ﺭﺿﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻨﻪ ﺃﻥ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺟﺎﻟﺴﺎ ﻓﻤﺮ ﺭﺟﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺑﻌﻴﺮ ﻭﺑﻴﻦ ﻳﺪﻳﻪ ﻗﺎﺋﺪ ﻭﺧﻠﻔﻪ ﺳﺎﺋﻖ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻟﻌﻦ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﻘﺎﺋﺪ ﻭاﻟﺴﺎﺋﻖ ﻭاﻟﺮاﻛﺐ

al-Sakn Ibn Sa’eed narrated from Abd al-Samad who narrated from his father Abd al-Warith who narrated from Hammad Ibn Salmah on the authority of Sa’eed Ibn Jumhan from Safeenah that :

Rasul-Allah ﷺ was sitting when a man passed by on a camel with another man leading the camel in the front and another man driving the camel from behind.

The Prophet ﷺ said: May Allah curse the leader, the driver, and the rider.

~Musnad al-Bazzar vol 9:286.

Allamah Nur ad-Deen al-Haythami said about this sanad :

رواه البزار، ورجاله ثقات

al-Bazzar narrated it and all of its narrators are trustworthy.

~Majmaa’ al-Zawa’id vol 1:113.

Who were the rider, the leader & the driver? Name revealed below :

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺧﻠﻒ ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻮاﺭﺙ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﻋﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﺑﻦ ﺟﻤﻬﺎﻥ ﻋﻦ ﺳﻔﻴﻨﺔ ﻣﻮﻟﻰ ﺃﻡ ﺳﻠﻤﺔ ﺃﻥ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺟﺎﻟﺴﺎ ﻓﻤﺮ ﺃﺑﻮ ﺳﻔﻴﺎﻥ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺑﻌﻴﺮ ﻭﻣﻌﻪ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﻭﺃﺥ ﻟﻪ، ﺃﺣﺪﻫﻤﺎ ﻳﻘﻮﺩ اﻟﺒﻌﻴﺮ ﻭاﻵﺧﺮ ﻳﺴﻮﻗﻪ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ: ﻟﻌﻦ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﺢاﻣﻞ ﻭاﻟﻤﺤﻤﻮﻝ ﻭاﻟﻘﺎﺋﺪ ﻭاﻟﺴﺎﺋﻖ

Khalaf narrated from Abd al-Warith who narrated from Sa’eed Ibn Jumhan who narrated from Safeenah :

The Prophet ﷺ was sitting when Abu Sufyan passed by on a camel and Mu’awiyyah was leading the camel and his brother was driving the camel.

Rasul-Allah ﷺ said : May Allah curse the one sitting, the one leading and the one driving.

~Ansab al-Ashraf vol 5:136

We have briefly quoted adh-Dhabhi & Hafidh Ibn Hajr, proving Ansab al-Ashraf to al-Baladhuri, click HERE for the scans.

• This is a Sahih sanad with all of its narrators being the narrator of al-Bukhari & Muslim except Sa’eed Ibn Jumhan who is Thiqah as mentioned by Yahya Ibn Ma’in and others (Taarikh Ibn Ma’in Riwayah al-Dawri vol 4:158)

2) Hadith of Aasim al-Laythi

Abu al-Qasim at-Tabarani mentioned :

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ اﻟﻌﺒﺎﺱ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻔﻀﻞ اﻷﺳﻔﺎﻃﻲ، ﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﻮﺳﻰ ﺑﻦ
ﺇﺳﻤﺎﻋﻴﻞ، ﻭﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺤﺴﻴﻦ اﻟﺼﺎﺑﻮﻧﻲ اﻟﺘﺴﺘﺮﻱ، ﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﻘﺒﺔ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻨﺎﻥ اﻟﺪاﺭﻉ ﻗﺎﻻ: ﺛﻨﺎ ﻏﺴﺎﻥ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻀﺮ، ﻋﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻣﺴﻠﻤﺔ، ﻋﻦ نصر ﺑﻦ ﻋﺎﺻﻢ اﻟﻠﻴﺜﻲ، ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻴﻪ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺩﺧﻠﺖ ﻣﺴﺠﺪ اﻟﻤﺪﻳﻨﺔ ﻓﺈﺫا اﻟﻨﺎﺱ ﻳﻘﻮﻟﻮﻥ: ﻧﻌﻮﺫ ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻪ ﻣﻦ ﻏﻀﺐ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻏﻀﺐ ﺭﺳﻮﻟﻪ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻗﻠﺖ: ﻣﺎﺫا ﻗﺎﻟﻮا؟ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ ﻳﺨﻄﺐ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻨﺒﺮﻩ ﻓﻘﺎﻡ ﺭﺟﻞ ﻓﺄﺧﺬ ﺑﻴﺪ اﺑﻨﻪ ﻓﺄﺧﺮﺟﻪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺴﺠﺪ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ: «ﻟﻌﻦ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﻘﺎﺋﺪ ﻭاﻟﻤﻘﻮﺩ ﻭﻳﻞ ﻟﻬﺬﻩ ﻳﻮﻣﺎ ﻟﻬﺬﻩ اﻷﻣﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻓﻼﻥ ﺫﻱ اﻻﺳﺘﺎﻩ»

Ghassan Ibn Mudar narrated on the authority of Sa’eed Ibn Yazid that Nasr ibn Aasim narrated from his father Aasim al-Laythi that he said :

I entered the Masjid of Madina & the people were saying : ‘We seek Allah’s refuge from the wrath of Allah & the wrath of His Messenger.’

So, I asked Why are you saying that? They replied : Rasul-Allah ﷺ was conducting a sermon and a man got up and took his son by the hand and got him out of the masjid so Rasul-Allah ﷺ said :

May Allah curse the one who took him and the one who followed. Woe to this nation, from so-and-so, the man with buttocks!’

~al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer at-Tabarani vol 17:176

•Allamah Nur ad-Deen al-Haythami said :

ﺭﻭاﻩ اﻟﻄﺒﺮاﻧﻲ ﻭﺭﺟﺎﻟﻪ ﺛﻘﺎﺕ

It was narrated by at-Tabarani and its narrators are trustworthy.

~Majmaa’ al-Zawa’id vol 5:242

Here, we see that the name of the person who got out of the masjid has been censored as they always do but Alhamdulillahi Rabb al-Alameen, we see a similar narration elsewhere with the same narrators :

ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺃﺧﺒﺮﺕ ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻣﺎﻟﻚ ﻛﺜﻴﺮ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺤﻴﻰ اﻟﺒﺼﺮﻱ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻏﺴﺎﻥ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻀﺮ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﻋﻦ ﻧﺼﺮ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺎﺻﻢ اﻟﻠﻴﺜﻲ ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻴﻪ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺩﺧﻠﺖ ﻣﺴﺠﺪ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ ﻭﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻳﻘﻮﻟﻮﻥ: ﻧﻌﻮﺫ ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻪ ﻣﻦ ﻏﻀﺐ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻏﻀﺐ ﺭﺳﻮﻟﻪ! ﻗﻠﺖ: ﻣﺎ ﻫﺬا! ﻗﺎﻟﻮا: ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﻣﺮ ﻗﺒﻴﻞ ﺃﺧﺬ ﺑﻴﺪ ﺃﺑﻴﻪ ﻭﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻤﻨﺒﺮ ﻳﺨﺮﺟﺎﻥ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺴﺠﺪ. ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ ﻓﻴﻬﻤﺎ ﻗﻮﻻ

Ibn Sa’ad said it was reported by Kathir ibn Yahya al-Basri that he narrated from Ghassan Ibn Mudar that he narrated from Sa’eed Ibn Yazid on the authority of Nasr ibn Aasim from his father Aasim al-Laythi that he said :

I entered the Masjid an-Nabvi and the companions were saying, ‘We seek refuge from the wrath of Allah and the wrath of His Messenger.’

So I asked ‘Why is that?’

They replied ‘Mu’awiyyah took the hand of his father and went out of the masjid while Rasul-Allah ﷺ was on the mimbar and Rasul-Allah ﷺ said something about them.’

~Tabqaat ibn Sa’ad vol 7:54-55

• The sanad of Ibn Sa’ad & at-Tabarani is the same and all of its narrators are trustworthy except Ibn Sa’ad includes an additional narrator Abu Malik Kathir Ibn Yahya al-Basri & He is Thiqah, as Ibn Hibban mentioned him in his Kitab al-Thiqat vol 9:26

• Also, Abu Haatim al-Raazi said :

ﻣﺤﻠﻪ اﻟﺼﺪﻕ ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﺘﺸﻴﻊ،

He was truthful & was Shia’a

~al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel vol 7:158

3) Part Three : Hadith of Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺯﻛﺮﻳﺎ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺤﻴﻰ اﻟﺴﺎﺟﻲ، ﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﺑﺸﺎﺭ ﺑﻨﺪاﺭ، ﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻤﻠﻚ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺼﺒﺎﺡ اﻟﻤﺴﻤﻌﻲ، ﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﻤﺮاﻥ ﺑﻦ ﺣﺪﻳﺮ، ﺃﻇﻨﻪ ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻣﺠﻠﺰ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻗﺎﻝ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻌﺎﺹ ﻭاﻟﻤﻐﻴﺮﺓ ﺑﻦ ﺷﻌﺒﺔ ﻟﻤﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ: ﺇﻥ اﻟﺤﺴﻦ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻠﻲ ﻋﻴﻲ، ﻭﺇﻥ ﻟﻪ ﻛﻼﻣﺎ ﻭﺭﺃﻳﺎ، ﻭﺇﻧﻪ ﻗﺪ ﻋﻠﻤﻨﺎ ﻛﻼﻣﻪ، ﻓﻴﺘﻜﻠﻢ ﻛﻼﻣﺎ ﻓﻼ ﻳﺠﺪ ﻛﻼﻣﺎ. ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻻ ﺗﻔﻌﻠﻮا. ﻓﺄﺑﻮا ﻋﻠﻴﻪ، ﻓﺼﻌﺪ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ اﻟﻤﻨﺒﺮ، ﻓﺬﻛﺮ ﻋﻠﻴﺎ ﻭﻭﻗﻊ ﻓﻴﻪ، ﺛﻢ ﺻﻌﺪ اﻟﻤﻐﻴﺮﺓ ﺑﻦ ﺷﻌﺒﺔ، ﻓﺤﻤﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﺃﺛﻨﻰ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ، ﺛﻢ ﻭﻗﻊ ﻓﻲ ﻋﻠﻲ ﺭﺿﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻨﻪ، ﺛﻢ ﻗﻴﻞ ﻟﻠﺤﺴﻦ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻠﻲ: اﺻﻌﺪ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻻ ﺃﺻﻌﺪ ﻭﻻ ﺃﺗﻜﻠﻢ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺗﻌﻄﻮﻧﻲ ﺇﻥ ﻗﻠﺖ ﺣﻘﺎ ﺃﻥ ﺗﺼﺪﻗﻮﻧﻲ، ﻭﺇﻥ ﻗﻠﺖ ﺑﺎﻃﻼ ﺃﻥ ﺗﻜﺬﺑﻮﻧﻲ. ﻓﺄﻋﻄﻮﻩ، ﻓﺼﻌﺪ اﻟﻤﻨﺒﺮ، ﻓﺤﻤﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﺃﺛﻨﻰ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻪ ﻳﺎ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﻭﺃﻧﺖ ﻳﺎ ﻣﻐﻴﺮﺓ ﺗﻌﻠﻤﺎﻥ ﺃﻥ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ﻗﺎﻝ: «ﻟﻌﻦ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﺴﺎﺋﻖ ﻭاﻟﺮاﻛﺐ» ﺃﺣﺪﻫﻤﺎ ﻓﻼﻥ؟ ﻗﺎﻻ: اﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﻧﻌﻢ ﺑﻠﻰ

Zakariyyah Ibn Yahya al-Saaji narrated from Muhammad Ibn Bashir who narrated from Abd al-Malik Ibn al-Sabbah who narrated from Imran Ibn Hudayr on the authority of Abu Majlis :

Amr Ibn al-Aas & Mugheera Ibn Shubah said to Mu’awiyyah : al-Hasan bin Ali has defects in speaking and he has his sayings and opinions, and we are aware of them, if he tries to speak them he won’t be able to say it. So Mu’awiyyah said: Do not do what you’ve planned.

Then Amr Ibn al-Aas went to the minbar, praised Allah and spoke bad about Ali then Mugheera Ibn Shubah went to the pulpit and did the same. Then it was said to Imam al-Hasan to go up to the pulpit.

Imam al-Hasan said ‘I won’t speak up until you all testify in whatever truth I say or if I say false, reject me.’ They promised, Imam Hasan went to the Minbar praised Allah and then said :

“By Allah, O Amr and O Mugheera, aren’t you aware that Rasul-Allah ﷺ said ‘May Allah curse the rider and the driver‘ and one of them is so-and-so (Mu’awiyyah)”

~al-Mu’jam al-Kabeer at-Tabarani vol 3:71

• It’s Sanad is Sahih, all of its narrators are the narrators of al-Bukhari or Muslim except Zakariyyah Ibn Yahya al-Saaji who is an Imam of Hadith himself and needs no introduction.

4) Part Four : Hadith of the stomach

Imam Muslim mentioned :

Ibn Abbas reported:

The Prophet ﷺ said to me : Go and call Mu’awiyyah. I returned and said: He is busy eating. He asked me to go again, I went back and said that he is busy eating, whereupon He ﷺ said:

‘May Allah never fill his stomach!’

~Sahih Muslim 2604 a

• The Prophet ﷺ cursed the stomach of Mu’awiyyah and he struggled with it –

Hafidh Ibn Kathir al-Damishqi wrote :

ﻭﻗﺪ اﻧﺘﻔﻊ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﺑﻬﺬﻩ اﻟﺪﻋﻮﺓ ﻓﻲ ﺩﻧﻴﺎﻩ ﻭﺃﺧﺮاﻩ، ﺃﻣﺎ ﻓﻲ ﺩﻧﻴﺎﻩ ﻓﺈﻧﻪ ﻟﻤﺎ ﺻﺎﺭ ﺇﻟﻰ اﻟﺸﺎﻡ ﺃﻣﻴﺮا، ﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﺄﻛﻞ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻴﻮﻡ ﺳﺒﻊ ﻣﺮاﺕ ﻳﺠﺎء ﺑﻘﺼﻌﺔ ﻓﻴﻬﺎ ﻟﺤﻢ ﻛﺜﻴﺮ ﻭﺑﺼﻞ ﻓﻴﺄﻛﻞ ﻣﻨﻬﺎ، ﻭﻳﺄﻛﻞ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻴﻮﻡ ﺳﺒﻊ ﺃﻛﻼﺕ ﺑﻠﺤﻢ، ﻭﻣﻦ اﻟﺤﻠﻮﻯ ﻭاﻟﻔﺎﻛﻬﺔ ﺷﻴﺌﺎ ﻛﺜﻴﺮا ﻭﻳﻘﻮﻝ ﻭاﻟﻠﻪ ﻣﺎ ﺃﺷﺒﻊ ﻭﺇﻧﻤﺎ ﺃﻋﻴﺎ، ﻭﻫﺬﻩ ﻧﻌﻤﺔ ﻭﻣﻌﺪﺓ ﻳﺮﻏﺐ ﻓﻴﻬﺎ ﻛﻞ اﻟﻤﻠﻮﻙ

Muawiyah took advantage of this in this world and the hereafter. As for this world, when he became the Emir of Syria, He would eat seven times a day. A plate containing a lot of meat and onions would be brought to him, and he would eat from it.

He would eat seven meals a day with meat and a lot of sweets and fruits and he would say I swear by Allah, my stomach is never filled but that I get exhausted and food is such a blessing for a king.

~al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah vol 8:119

• Eating from seven plates is a sign of a hypocrite but why bother, his animosity for Imam Ali is sufficient for his Nifaq & Kufr :

، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ يَأْكُلُ فِي مِعًى وَاحِدٍ، وَإِنَّ الْكَافِرَ ـ أَوِ الْمُنَافِقَ فَلاَ أَدْرِي أَيَّهُمَا قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ يَأْكُلُ فِي سَبْعَةِ أَمْعَاءٍ

Rasul-Allah ﷺ said ‘A believer eats in one stomach and a kafir or hypocrite eats in seven stomachs.

~Sahih al-Bukhari, 5394

Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned :

ﺟﺮﻳﺮ، ﻋﻦ ﻣﻐﻴﺮﺓ، ﻋﻦ اﻟﺸﻌﺒﻲ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺃﻭﻝ ﻣﻦ ﺧﻄﺐ ﺟﺎﻟﺴﺎ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ، ﺣﻴﻦ ﻛﺒﺮ ﻭﻛﺜﺮ ﺷﺤﻤﻪ ﻭﻋﻈﻢ ﺑﻄﻨﻪ

Jareer narrated from Mugheera that al-Shabee said :

The first to start the sermon of Jummah while sitting was Mu’awiyyah and this was because he had thick layers of fat and his stomach grew large.

~Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah vol 7:247
