Part Five : From the tongue of Imam Ali.
Welcome to our blog! In this thread, We will prove how the Holy Qu’ran has sent La’nah upon Mu’awiyyah Ibn Abi Sufyan, followed by two other threads concluding La’nah upon Mu’awiyyah from the tongue of the Prophet & the Sunni Muhaditheen.
1) Part One : Kufr of Mu’awiyyah :
Allah ﷻ says :
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَمَاتُوا۟ وَهُمْ كُفَّارٌ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ لَعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ
Those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers upon them is the Curse of Allah
~Surah al-Baqarah 2:161
Hafidh al-Baladhuri mentioned :
ﻭﺣﺪﺛﻨﻲ ﺇﺳﺤﺎﻕ ﻭﺑﻜﺮ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻬﻴﺜﻢ ﻗﺎﻻ ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺮﺯاﻕ ﺑﻦ ﻫﻤﺎﻡ ﺃﻧﺒﺄﻧﺎ ﻣﻌﻤﺮ ﻋﻦ اﺑﻦ ﻃﺎﻭﺱ ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻴﻪ ﻋﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻌﺎﺹ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻛﻨﺖ ﻋﻨﺪ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻳﻄﻠﻊ ﻋﻠﻴﻜﻢ ﻣﻦ ﻫﺬا اﻟﻔﺞ ﺭﺟﻞ ﻳﻤﻮﺕ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻏﻴﺮ ﻣﻠﺘﻲ.. ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻓﻄﻠﻊ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﻓﻘﺎﻝ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻫﻮ ﻫﺬا
Ishaq Ibn Mansoor narrated from Abd al-Razzaq al-Sinani who narrated from Ma’mar who narrated from Abd-Allah Ibn Tawus on the authority of his father Tawus Ibn Kaysan that Abd-Allah Ibn Amr Ibn al-Aas narrated :
We were with The Prophet ﷺ and he said ‘A man will come out of this valley and his death shall not be following my religion.’
Mu’awiyyah came out, The Prophet ﷺ ‘This is him.’

This Sanad is Sahih upon the condition of al-Bukhari & Muslim. All narrators are narrators of Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim.
For example :
“حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ طَاوُسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ
~Sahih al-Bukhari 1339

Some of the Nawasib say Ansab al-Ashraf is not proven from al-Baladhuri, they do not say it based upon investigation but only because this book contains contents which the lovers of Mu’awiyyah do not like, let us quote some of the leading Sunni scholar of Rijal proving this book to al-Baladhuri :
• Allamah adh-Dhabhi mentioned :
ﻓﺄﻣﺎ اﻟﺒﻼﺫﺭﻱ اﻟﻜﺒﻴﺮ ﻓﻬﻮ ﺃﺣﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺤﻴﻰ, ﺻﺎﺣﺐ “التاريخ اﻟﻜﺒﻴﺮ”, ﺣﺎﻓﻆ ﺃﺧﺒﺎﺭﻱ ﻋﻼﻣﺔ
As for the elder al-Baladhuri, that’s Ahmad Ibn Yahya, the writer of al-Taarikh al-Kabir (Ansab al-Ashraf), He was a preserver of Hadith and an eminent scholar of traditions.

• Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani mentioned :
ﺫﻛﺮ ﺫﻟﻚ اﻟﺒﻼﺫﺭﻱ ﻓﻲ ﺃﻧﺴﺎﺏ اﻷﺷﺮاﻑ
And al-Baladhuri mentioned it in Ansab al-Ashraf

Ali Ibn al-Ja’ad (D.230 H) said :
قال ابن هانى: سمعت أبا عبد الله، وقال له دلويه: سمعت علي بن الجعد يقول: مات والله معاوية على غير الإسلام.
Ibn Hani said I heard Ahmad Ibn Hanbal and Daluyeh said to him: I heard Ali Ibn al-Ja’ad say:
I swear by Allah, Mu’awiyyah died on something other than Islam.

Ali Ibn al-Ja’ad existed before al-Bukhari and is the writer of the famous Musnad Ibn al-Ja’ad, Allamah adh-Dhabhi said about him :
ﻋﻠﻲ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺠﻌﺪ.. اﻹﻣﺎﻡ اﻟﺤﺎﻓﻆ اﻟﺤﺠﺔ ﻣﺴﻨﺪ ﺑﻐﺪاﺩ
Ali Ibn al-Ja’ad, the Imam, the preserver of Hadith, the authority, the narrator of Baghdad.

2) Part Two : The Accursed Tree
Allah ﷻ says :
وَٱلشَّجَرَةَ ٱلْمَلْعُونَةَ فِى ٱلْقُرْءَانِۚ وَنُخَوِّفُهُمْ فَمَا يَزِيدُهُمْ إِلَّا طُغْيَٰنًا كَبِيرًا
And the Accursed tree (al-Shajrah al-Maloonah) mentioned in the Qur’an and We warned them, but it increases them only in transgression.
~Surah al-Isra’ 17:60
Ali Ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi al-Shafi’i (D.468 H) mentioned :
وروى السدي عن أبي مالك عن ابن عباس قال: الشجرة الملعونة في القرآن بنو أمية
It was narrated from al-Suddi on the authority of Abu Malik from Abd-Allah Ibn Abbas that he said :
“al-Shajrah al-Maloonah (The accursed tree) in the Qur’an is Bani Umayyah.”

Allamah Abu Ja’far at-Tabari mentioned :
ﻭاﻟﺸﺠﺮﺓ اﻟﻤﻠﻌﻮﻧﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻘﺮﺁﻥ ﻭﻧﺨﻮﻓﻬﻢ ﻓﻤﺎ ﻳﺰﻳﺪﻫﻢ ﺇﻻ ﻃﻐﻴﺎﻧﺎ ﻛﺒﻴﺮا ﻭﻻ اﺧﺘﻼﻑ ﺑﻴﻦ اﺣﺪ اﻧﻪ اﺭاﺩ ﺑﻬﺎ ﺑﻨﻰ اﻣﻴﻪ.
He quoted this ayah and then said :
“There is no disagreement amongst us that the accursed tree is Bani Umayyah.”

• Mu’awiyyah was the first king of the Bani Umayyah.
3) Part Three : Unjust killing
Allah ﷻ says :
وَمَن يَقْتُلْ مُؤْمِنًا مُّتَعَمِّدًا فَجَزَآؤُهُۥ جَهَنَّمُ خَٰلِدًا فِيهَا وَغَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَعَنَهُۥ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُۥ عَذَابًا عَظِيمًا
And whoever kills a believer intentionally his place is in hell forever and Allah is angry at him and has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment.
~Surah an-Nisa’ 4:93
• Imam Muslim narrates –
عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ الْمَسْجِدَ فَإِذَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ جَالِسٌ فِي ظِلِّ الْكَعْبَةِ… فَقُلْتُ لَهُ هَذَا ابْنُ عَمِّكَ مُعَاوِيَةُ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَأْكُلَ أَمْوَالَنَا بَيْنَنَا بِالْبَاطِلِ وَنَقْتُلَ أَنْفُسَنَا
Abd al-Rahman b. Abd Rabb al-Ka’aba narrated :
Abd-Allah Ibn Amr Ibn al-Aas was sitting in the shade of the Ka’ba. I said to him: This cousin of yours, Mu’awiyyah, orders us to unjustly consume our wealth among ourselves and to kill one another.
~Sahih Muslim 1844 a

Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani mentioned :
(1634) ﺣﺠﺮ اﺑﻦ ﻋﺪﻱ…ﻭﺃﻧﻪ ﺷﻬﺪ ﺑﻌﺪ ﺫﻟﻚ اﻟﺠﻤﻞ ﻭﺻﻔﻴﻦ ﻭﺻﺤﺐ ﻋﻠﻴﺎ، ﻓﻜﺎﻥ ﻣﻦ ﺷﻴﻌﺘﻪ، ﻭﻗﺘﻞ ﺑﻤﺮﺝ ﻋﺬﺭاء ﺑﺄﻣﺮ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ
Companion of the Prophet (1634)
Hujr Ibn Adee’.. He witnessed the Battle Jamal and Siffin and accompanied Ali, so he was one of Ali’s followers, and he was killed in Marj Adhraa by the order of Mu’awiyyah.

Allamah Ibn Athir al-Jaziri mentioned :
ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﺳﻴﺮﻩ ﺇﻟﻰ اﻟﺤﺠﺎﺯ ﻭاﻟﻴﻤﻦ ﻟﻴﻘﺘﻞ ﺷﻴﻌﺔ ﻋﻠﻲ، ﻭﻳﺄﺧﺬ اﻟﺒﻴﻌﺔ ﻟﻪ، ﻓﺴﺎﺭ ﺇﻟﻰ اﻟﻤﺪﻳﻨﺔ، ﻓﻔﻌﻞ ﺑﻬﺎ ﺃﻓﻌﺎﻻ ﺷﻨﻴﻌﺔ
Mu’awiyyah sent Busr Ibn Artat to Hejaz & Yemen to kill the followers of Ali and take people’s allegiance for him, he went to Medinah and did heinous crimes there.

Also, the killer of Ammar Ibn Yasir, Owais al-Qarni, Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr and the 25,000 killed during the Battle of Siffin.
4) Part Four : Surah al-Ahzab
Allah ﷻ says :
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ لَعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا مُّهِينًا
Indeed, those who hurt (آذى) Allah and His Messenger – Allah has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment.
~Surah al-Ahzab 33:57
• Imam al-Haakim al-Nishapuri mentioned –
ﻋﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻧﻴﺎﺭ اﻷﺳﻠﻤﻲ، ﻋﻦ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ ﺷﺎﺱ اﻷﺳﻠﻤﻲ…
ﻗﺎﻝ: (رسول الله) «ﻳﺎ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ، ﺃﻣﺎ ﻭاﻟﻠﻪ ﻟﻘﺪ ﺁﺫﻳﺘﻨﻲ» ﻓﻘﻠﺖ: ﺃﻋﻮﺫ ﺑﺎﻟﻠﻪ ﺃﻥ ﺃﺅﺫﻳﻚ ﻳﺎ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺑﻠﻰ، ﻣﻦ ﺁﺫﻯ ﻋﻠﻴﺎ ﻓﻘﺪ ﺁﺫاﻧﻲ
Amr Ibn Shas al-Aslami narrated :
Rasul-Allah ﷺ said ‘O Amr, you’ve hurt me.’
I replied : ‘ I seek refuge in Allah from doing so Ya Rasul-Allah’
Rasul-Allah ﷺ replied : “Whoever hurts (ﺁﺫﻯ) Ali has hurt me.”
~Mustadarak ala al-Sahihayn 4619
After quoting this Hadith Imam al-Haakim said :
ﻫﺬا ﺣﺪﻳﺚ ﺻﺤﻴﺢ اﻹﺳﻨﺎﺩ ﻭﻟﻢ ﻳﺨﺮﺟﺎﻩ
“This Hadith is Sahih in its chain but they (Bukhari & Muslim) didn’t record it in their book.”
• Even Allamah adh-Dhabhi called it Sahih in it’s Talkhees.

There is no dispute that Mu’awiyyah fought against Imam Ali in the Battle of Siffin, hurting the Imam and killing those whom he loved. Mu’awiyyah would start the trend of abusing Imam Ali & his sons on the minbar.
The blessed Imam was so annoyed as much so that he would say :
ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻫﺸﻴﻢ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺃﺧﺒﺮﻧﺎ ﺣﺼﻴﻦ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻌﻘﻞ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺻﻠﻴﺖ ﻣﻊ ﻋﻠﻲ ﺻﻼﺓ اﻟﻐﺪاﺓ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻓﻘﻨﺖ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﻓﻲ ﻗﻨﻮﺗﻪ: اﻟﻠﻬﻢ ﻋﻠﻴﻚ ﺑﻤﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﻭﺃﺷﻴﺎﻋﻪ،
Hushaym narrated from Hossain who narrated from Abd al-Rahman Ibn Ma’aqil who said
‘I prayed Fajr with Ali and he would say in the qunoot : ‘O Allah deal with Mu’awiyyah & his followers.’

5) Part Five : From the tongue of Imam Ali.
Allamah Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani mentioned –
ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺎﺩ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻴﺴﻰ اﻟﺠﻌﻔﻲ اﻟﻜﻮﻓﻲ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ ﺑﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ اﻟﺒﻬﻠﻮﻝ اﻟﻜﻮﻓﻲ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺻﺎﻟﺢ ﺑﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ اﻷﺳﻮﺩ، ﻋﻦ ﻫﺎﺷﻢ ﺑﻦ ﺑﺮﻳﺪ، ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ اﻟﺘﻴﻤﻲ، ﻋﻦ ﺛﺎﺑﺖ ﻣﻮﻟﻰ ﺁﻝ ﺃﺑﻲ ﺫﺭ , ﻋﻦ ﺃﻡ ﺳﻠﻤﺔ ﻗﺎﻟﺖ: ﺳﻤﻌﺖ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻳﻘﻮﻝ: ﻋﻠﻲ ﻣﻊ اﻟﻘﺮﺁﻥ , ﻭاﻟﻘﺮﺁﻥ ﻣﻌﻪ ﻻ ﻳﻔﺘﺮﻗﺎﻥ ﺣﺘﻰ ﻳﺮﺩا ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺤﻮﺽ
Narrated from Abad Ibn Isa al-Jawfi who narrated from Uthman Ibn Abi al-Bahlol al-Kufi who narrated from Saleh Ibn Abi al-Aswad on the authority of Hashim Ibn Burayd from Abi Sa’eed al-Tamimi on the authority of Thabit, client of Aal’ Abi Dharr that Umm al-Mu’meenin Umm Salamah said that she heard :
The Prophet ﷺ say : ‘Ali is with the Qur’an and the Qur’an is with him, they will never separate until they meet me at the Hawdh.’
~al-Mu’jam al-Sagheer lil-Tabarani vol 2:28.

Imam al-Haakim took this Hadith in his Mustadarak and said :
ﻫﺬا ﺣﺪﻳﺚ ﺻﺤﻴﺢ اﻹﺳﻨﺎﺩ ﻭﺃﺑﻮ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ اﻟﺘﻴﻤﻲ ﻫﻮ ﻋﻘﻴﺼﺎء ﺛﻘﺔ ﻣﺄﻣﻮﻥ، ﻭﻟﻢ ﻳﺨﺮﺟﺎﻩ
This Hadith is Sahih in its Sanad & Abu Sa’eed al-Tamimi is Thiqah but they (Bukhari & Muslim) didn’t record it.
~Mustadarak ala al-Sahihayn 4628
• Allamah adh-Dhabhi said This Hadith is Sahih on the Talkhees of Mustadarak.

Imam Ali, with whom is the Qur’an, would curse Mu’awiyyah :
ﻭﺭﺟﻊ اﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﺎﺱ ﻭﺷﺮﻳﺢ ﺑﻦ ﻫﺎﻧﺊ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻋﻠﻲ، ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﺇﺫا ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻐﺪاﺓ ﻳﻘﻨﺖ ﻓﻴﻘﻮﻝ: اﻟﻠﻬﻢ اﻟﻌﻦ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ
Ibn Abbas and Shuraih Ibn Hani went to Ali, and when Ali was praying Fajr, he would say in the qunoot :
‘O Allah curse Mu’awiyyah.’
