Prostrating on Turbah from Sunni Source

Part One : From The Prophet ﷺ

Part Two : From The Companions

Part Three : From The Tabiun

Part Four : From The Sunni Scholars

Welcome to our Blog! This article is a refutation of those who say prostrating upon Turbah is Biddah.

1) Part One : From The Prophet ﷺ

1) Imam al-Bukhari mentioned :

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri said :
“I saw Rasul-Allah ﷺ prostrating in mud and water and saw the mark of mud on his forehead.”

~Sahih al-Bukhari 836

2) Imam al-Bukhari mentioned :

Narrated by Maymoonah that Rasul-Allah ﷺ used to pray on Khumra.

~Sahih al-Bukhari 381

Hafidh Majd ad-Deen al-Jazari (D.606 H) mentioned :

Khumra is what the Shia’a prostrate upon now.

~Jami’ al-Usool fee Ahadith al-Rasul vol 5:467

3) Imam al-Bukhari mentioned :

Jaabir Ibn Abd-Allah narrated that Rasul-Allah ﷺ said : ‘Soil has been made for my Ummah a place of prostration and a thing to perform Tayammum.’

~Sahih al-Bukhari 335

Qadhi al-Shawkani wrote :

ﻭاﺳﺘﺪﻝ اﻟﻬﺎﺩﻱ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﺮاﻫﺔ ﻣﺎ ﻟﻴﺲ ﻣﻦ اﻷﺭﺽ ﺑﺤﺪﻳﺚ:
ﺟﻌﻠﺖ ﻟﻨﺎ اﻷﺭﺽ ﻣﺴﺠﺪا ﻭﻃﻬﻮﺭا

Yahya ibn al-Husayn al-Hadi would consider it makhrooh to prostrate on anything but soil and he would use as evidence the hadith ‘The earth (soil) is a place of prostration & purification.’

~Nayl al-Avtar vol 2:147

4) Imam Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi mentioned :

ﻗﺮﺉ ﻋﻠﻰ اﺑﻦ ﻭﻫﺐ ﺃﺧﺒﺮﻙ اﺑﻦ ﻟﻬﻴﻌﺔ، ﻭﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺤﺎﺭﺙ، ﻋﻦ ﺑﻜﺮ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻮاﺩﺓ اﻟﺠﺬاﻣﻲ، ﻋﻦ ﺻﺎﻟﺢ ﺑﻦ ﺣﻴﻮاﻥ اﻟﺴﺒﺎﺋﻲ ﺣﺪﺛﻪ ﺃﻥ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ ﺭﺃﻯ ﺭﺟﻼ ﻳﺴﺠﺪ ﺑﺠﻨﺒﻪ ﻭﻗﺪ اﻋﺘﻢ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺟﺒﻬﺘﻪ ﻓﺤﺴﺮ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﷺ ﻋﻦ ﺟﺒﻬﺘﻪ

Saleh Ibn Haywan al-Sabae’e narrated that Rasul-Allah ﷺ saw a man prostrating while his forehead was covered (with cloth) so He ﷺ uncovered the man’s forehead.

~Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi 2659

• Indicating the Prophet ﷺ didn’t like anyone to prostrate on a cloth.

• Some say this chain is Mursal as Saleh Ibn Haywan al-Sabae’e was not a Sahabi but there’s a difference of opinion on this as many claimed him to be a Sahabi as mentioned by Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani in his al-Isabah vol 3:375

5) Imam Abu Dawood al-Sijastani mentioned :

Narrated Jabir ibn Abd-Allah :

I would offer Dhuhr with Rasul-Allah ﷺ and take a handful of pebbles so that they might become cold in my hand and I placed them before me so that I may put my forehead on them for prostration. I did this due to the intensity of the heat.

~Sunan Abi Dawud 399

• This proves Hadhrat Jaabir would prostrate on pebbles even if it was intensely hot

• Similar has been narrated by Anas Ibn Malik in the Sunan al-Kubra of al-Bayhaqi 2706

6) Imam at-Tirmidhi mentioned :

Umm al-Mu’meenin Umm Salamah narrated:

The Prophet ﷺ saw a boy called Aflah blowing when he prostrated. So He ﷺ said: ‘O Aflah! Put your face in the dust (while prostration).’

~Jami` at-Tirmidhi 381

7) Imam Abul Qasim at-Tabarani mentioned :

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺣﻤﻠﺔ ﺑﻦ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ اﻟﻐﺰﻱ، ﺑﻤﺪﻳﻨﺔ ﻏﺰﺓ , ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻳﻮﺳﻒ اﻟﻔﺮﻳﺎﺑﻲ ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺳﻔﻴﺎﻥ، ﻋﻦ ﻋﻮﻑ، ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ ﻋﻦ ﺳﻠﻤﺎﻥ اﻟﻔﺎﺭﺳﻲ ﻋﻦ اﻟﻨﺒﻲ ﷺ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺗﻤﺴﺤﻮا ﺑﺎﻷﺭﺽ؛ ﻓﺈﻧﻬﺎ ﺑﻜﻢ ﺑﺮﺓ

Abu Uthman narrates that Salman al-Farsi said that the Prophet ﷺ said :

“Wipe from the soil as it is kind to you.”

~al-Mujam al-Sagheer at-Tabarani 416

•Shaykh al-Albani said on this :

ﻭﻫﺬا ﺳﻨﺪ ﺻﺤﻴﺢ…..ﻭﻫﻮ اﻟﺬﻱ ﺭﺟﺤﻪ اﺑﻦ اﻷﺛﻴﺮ ﻛﻤﺎ ﻳﻔﻴﺪ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻗﻮﻟﻪ: ﺃﺭاﺩ ﺑﻪ اﻟﺘﻴﻤﻢ، ﻭﻗﻴﻞ: ﺃﺭاﺩ ﻣﺒﺎﺷﺮﺓ ﺗﺮاﺑﻬﺎ ﺑﺎﻟﺠﺒﺎﻩ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺴﺠﻮﺩ ﻣﻦ ﻏﻴﺮ ﺣﺎﺋﻞ ﻭﻳﻜﻮﻥ ﻫﺬا ﺃﻣﺮ ﺗﺄﺩﻳﺐ ﻭاﺳﺘﺤﺒﺎﺏ، ﻻ ﻭﺟﻮﺏ

This chain is Sahih and the opinion favored by Ibn al-Athir is that ‘He ﷺ intended tayammum and it’s said He intended the soil to directly touch his forehead during prostration without a barrier and this is a matter of discipline and Mustahhab but not wajib.’

~al-Silsilah al-Ahadith al-Sahiha vol 4:401

Part Two : From The Companions

1) Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned :

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻭﻛﻴﻊ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺳﻔﻴﺎﻥ، ﻋﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻜﺮﻳﻢ، ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻋﺒﻴﺪﺓ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻛﺎﻥ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ، ﻳﺼﻠﻲ ﻭﻻ ﻳﺴﺠﺪ ﺇﻻ ﻋﻠﻰ اﻷﺭﺽ

From Abu Ubayd Ibn Abd-Allah ibn Masud : That Abd-Allah Ibn Masood didn’t prostrate on anything except soil.

~Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 4082

• They criticize this chain – that Abu Ubayd to his father, Ibn Masud is Mursal, However, his narrations are still accepted :

روى عن أبيه وقد اختلف في سماعه منه وأجمعوا ‌على ‌أنه ‌ثقة ‌في ‌كل ‌ما ‌رواه

Ibn Abd al-Barr said : There is a difference of opinion if he heard from his father but everyone agreed that he is trustworthy in all of his narrations.

~al-Istighna fee Ma’arifat al-Mashureen vol 2:810

•Furthermore, we have narrations from Ibn Masud’s close disciple, Masrouq, that he would do the same :

ﺃﺧﺒﺮﻧﺎ ﻣﺴﻠﻢ ﺑﻦ ﺇﺑﺮاﻫﻴﻢ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻗﺮﺓ ﺑﻦ ﺧﺎﻟﺪ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻛﺎﻥ ﻣﺴﺮﻭﻕ ﺇﺫا ﺧﺮﺝ ﻳﺨﺮﺝ ﺑﻠﺒﻨﺔ ﻳﺴﺠﺪ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺴﻔﻴﻨﺔ

Ibn Sireen said ‘Whenever Masrouq travelled on a ship, he would carry a brick with him and he would prostrate on it.’

~al-Tabqat al-Kubra vol 6:141

Allamah al-Ijli wrote about Masrouq :

ﻣﺴﺮﻭﻕ ﺗﺎﺑﻌﻲ، ﺛﻘﺔ، ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﺃﺣﺪ ﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﻳﻘﺮﺋﻮﻥ ﻭﻳﻔﺘﻮﻥ، ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﺼﻠﻲ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺗﺮﻡ ﻗﺪﻣﺎﻩ.

Masrouq – Tabi’i, Thiqah, He was one of the companions of Abd-Allah Ibn Mas’ud who used to teach the Qur’an & issue fatawa and he would pray until his feet swell.

~al-Thiqat page 426

2) Abd al-Razzaq al-Sinani mentioned :

ﻋﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻤﺮ، ﻋﻦ ﻧﺎﻓﻊ، ﺃﻥ اﺑﻦ ﻋﻤﺮ: ﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﻜﺮﻩ ﺃﻥ ﻳﺴﺠﺪ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﻮﺭ ﻋﻤﺎﻣﺘﻪ ﺣﺘﻰ ﻳﻜﺸﻔﻬﺎ

Nafee’ narrated that Ibn Umar used to dislike prostrating on the cloth of his turban until he would uncover it.

~Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 1570

3) Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned :

ﻧﺎ ﻭﻛﻴﻊ، ﻋﻦ ﺳﻜﻦ ﺑﻦ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻛﺮﻳﻤﺔ، ﻋﻦ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﺎﺩﺓ، ﻋﻦ ﻣﺤﻤﻮﺩ ﺑﻦ ﺭﺑﻴﻊ، ﻋﻦ ﻋﺒﺎﺩﺓ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺼﺎﻣﺖ ﺃﻧﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺇﺫا ﻗﺎﻡ ﺇﻟﻰ اﻟﺼﻼﺓ ﺣﺴﺮ اﻟﻌﻤﺎﻣﺔ ﻋﻦ ﺟﺒﻬﺘﻪ

Mahmoud Ibn Rabiyah narrated that ‘When Ubadah ibn al-Samit would stand for praying, he would move the turban from his forehead.’

~Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 2755.

• So that their foreheads directly touch the ground

4) Abu Mansoor al-Maturidi mentions :

ﻭﻗﺎﻝ اﻟﺤﺎﺭﺙ اﻟﻐﻨﻮﻱ: ﺳﺠﺪ ﺣﺘﻰ ﺃﻛﻞ اﻟﺘﺮاﺏ ﺟﺒﻬﺘﻪ

al-Harith al-Ghanwy said “Murrah ibn Sharahil al-Hamadani would prostrate until the dust fatigued his forehead.”

~Tafsir al-Maturidi vol 1:254

Part Three : From The Tabiun

1) Hafidh ibn Hajr al-Asqalani wrote :

ﺭﻭﻱ ﻋﻦ ﻋﻤﺮ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﻌﺰﻳﺰ ﺃﻧﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻳﺆﺗﻰ ﺑﺘﺮاﺏ ﻓﻴﻮﺿﻊ ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﺨﻤﺮﺓ ﻓﻴﺴﺠﺪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ

It’s narrated from Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz that he would put dust on the Khamra and prostrate upon it.

~Fath al-Baari Sharah Sahih al-Bukhari vol 1:488

Imam Abu Dawood al-Sijastani mentioned :

And now you see people not praying except on a carpet while the Prophet ﷺ NEVER prayed upon a carpet rather he prayed upon the soil.
