Welcome to our Blog! The Nawasib say Mu’awiyyah & A’isha revolted against Emir al-Mu’meenin for the revenge of Uthman’s murder but this article shall unveil who were the main intruder behind Uthman’s killing, here is an index :

1) Talha Ibn Ubayd-Allah

2) A’isha Bint Abi Bakr

3) Amr Ibn al-Aas & Mu’awiyyah Ibn Abi Sufyan

4) Abd-Allah Ibn Masud, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari & Ammar Ibn Yasir

5) Amr Ibn al-Hamq, Abd al-Rahman Ibn Udays & The Egyptians.

6) Muhammad the son of Abu Bakr

7) Emir al-Mu’meenin Ali Ibn Abi Talib

Before we begin the post, Mu’awiyyah’s lovers blame us for celebrating 18th Dhu al-Hijjah not due to the event of Ghadeer, but to celebrate the death of Uthman but let us show that Uthman was killed on the 11th of Dhu al-Hijjah and not the 18th as Ibn Abi Shaybah mentioned :

ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﻣﻌﺘﻤﺮ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻠﻴﻤﺎﻥ، ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺳﻤﻌﺖ ﺃﺑﻲ ﻳﻘﻮﻝ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﺎ ﺃﺑﻮ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ، ﺃﻥ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ، ﻗﺘﻞ ﻓﻲ ﺃﻭﺳﻂ ﺃﻳﺎﻡ اﻟﺘﺸﺮﻳﻖ

Abu Uthman narrated that :

“Uthman was killed in the middle of Ayam al-Tashreeq (which is 11th Dhu al-Hijjah).”

~Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah vol 21:444

1) Talha Ibn Ubayd-Allah

Allamah al-Baladhuri mentioned :

al-Madaini narrated from Abu Juzz that Ayub & Ibn Awn narrated that Muhammad Ibn Sireen said :

‘None amongst the companion of the Prophet ﷺ was as staunch against Uthman as Talha.’

~Ansab al-Ashraf vol 6:201

Allamah Ibn Shabbah narrated :

ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻻ ﻭاﻟﻠﻪ ﻭﻻ ﻧﻌﻤﺔ ﻋﻴﻦ، ﻻ ﻧﺘﺮﻛﻪ ﻳﺄﻛﻞ ﻭﻳﺸﺮﺏ.

al-Kalbi said “Uthman said to Ali ‘Indeed Talha has killed me from thirst and it’s better to be killed from a sword than by thirst.’ So Ali went to Talha and said ‘You are making Uthman die of thirst and that is not right, I would like you to let the water enter his house (as Talha stopped water supply to his house)’ So Talha replied ‘I swear by Allah, We will not let Uthman eat or drink.'”

~Taarikh al-Madinah vol 4:1202

Allamah Ibn Shabbah also narrated :

Muhammad Ibn Ali narrated from Abu Amr & al-Zuhri on the authority of Muhammad Ibn Ka’ab al-Qurazi that Abd-Allah Ibn al-Zubayr said :

On Eid al-Adha, Ali led the people in prayer. The people went to him and left Talha so Talha went to Uthman to apologise. Uthman said to him : ‘You have incited the people against me and now that Ali overcame you in the matter of Caliphate and you failed to achieve what you wanted, you came to me to apologize? May Allah never accept it from you.’

~Taarikh al-Madina vol 4:1197-1198

• This proves that Talha was against Uthman to claim caliphate for himself but when he saw people were inclined towards Imam Ali more than Talha, he forsake Imam Ali and went back to Uthman.

2) A’isha Bint Abi Bakr

Hafidh Abu Faraj Ibn Burhan ad-Deen mentioned :

ﻓﺈﻧﻚ ﻗﺪ ﺧﺮﺟﺖ ﻣﻦ ﺑﻴﺘﻚ ﺗﺰﻋﻤﻴﻦ ﺃﻧﻚ ﺗﺮﻳﺪﻳﻦ اﻹﺻﻼﺡ ﺑﻴﻦ اﻟﻤﺴﻠﻤﻴﻦ، ﻭﻃﻠﺒﺖ ﺑﺰﻋﻤﻚ ﺩﻡ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ ﻭﺃﻧﺖ ﺑﺎﻷﻣﺲ ﺗﺆﻟﺒﻴﻦ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻓﺘﻘﻮﻟﻴﻦ ﻓﻲ ﻣﻸ ﻣﻦ ﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ اﻗﺘﻠﻮا ﻧﻌﺜﻼ ﻓﻘﺪ ﻛﻔﺮ

Imam Ali wrote to A’isha : You’ve come out of your house claiming to reconcile between the Muslimeen and you ask for Uthman’s blood while yesterday it was you who revolted against him and you said to a group of companions to KILL this NA’ATHAL (Uthman) for he disbelieved.

~Sirat al-Halbiyyah vol 3:402, Published : Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut.

• Ibn al-Manzur said al-Na’athal means : The old fool (اﻟﺸﻴﺦ اﻷﺣﻤﻖ)

~Lisan al-Arab vol 11:669

Allamah al-Baladhuri mentioned :

• ﺇﺳﺤﺎﻕ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ، ﻋﻦ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ، ﺣﺪﺛﻨﻲ ﺳﻌﻴﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ:ﻋﻦ اﺑﻦ ﺣﺎﻃﺐ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺃﻗﺒﻠﺖ ﻣﻊ ﻋﻠﻲ ﻳﻮﻡ اﻟﺠﻤﻞ..

Ibn Haatib said : We were with Ali on the day of Jamal and Ali said ‘Indeed Humayra (Aisha) wanted to kill me just like she wanted to kill Uthman.

~Ansab al-Ashraf vol 3:46

3) Amr Ibn al-Aas & Mu’awiyyah Ibn Abi Sufyan

Allamah Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned :

ﻓﻠﻤﺎ ﻭﻻﻩ ﻋﻤﺎﻥ، ﻭﻋﺰﻝ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻌﺎﺹ ﺟﻌﻞ ﻋﻤﺮﻭ ﺑﻦ اﻟﻌﺎﺹ ﻳﻄﻌﻦ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ ﺃﻳﻀﺎ، ﻭﻳﺆﻟﺐ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ، ﻭﻳﺴﻌﻰ ﻓﻲ ﺇﻓﺴﺎﺩ ﺃﻣﺮﻩ، ﻓﻠﻤﺎ ﺑﻠﻐﻪ ﻗﺘﻞ ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺇﻧﻲ ﺇﺫا ﻧﻜﺄﺕ ﻗﺮﺣﺔ ﺃﺩﻣﻴﺘﻬﺎ

Ibn Abi Sarh was made the governor of Egypt and Amr Ibn al-Aas was removed from his post, therefore, Amr started to insult Uthman for it and would make people revolt against Uthman and would look to corrupt the government of Uthman and then when Amr heard that Uthman has been killed he said : I scratched a wound and it started to bleed.

~al-Isti’ab fee ma’arifat al-Ashab vol 3:919,

• Note : Ibn Abi Sarah was the foster brother of Uthman. On the day of conquest of Mecca the Prophet ﷺ granted amnesty to all except 4 in which was Ibn Abi Sarh and he seeked refuge in Uthman’s house and Uthman pleaded for him to the Prophet ﷺ even tho He ﷺ disliked it.  (Check Sunan an-Nisai’i 4067)

>> Ibn Bakkar mentioned :

Abu Tufayl Aamir Ibn Wathilah visited Mu’awiyyah so Mu’awiyyah said to him ‘Aren’t you one of the killers of Uthman?’ He replied ‘No, but I’m one of those who was present but did not support Uthman.’ Mu’awiyyah said ‘What prevented you from supporting him?’ He replied ‘The Muhajireen & the Ansar did not support him.’

Mu’awiyyah said ‘Uthman’s right was obligatory and it was your duty to support him.’ He replied ‘So, what prevented you from supporting Uthman while the people of Syria were with you?’ Mu’awiyyah said ‘As for my seeking his revenge is my support.’ Abu Tufayl laughed and said you are just like the poet said : ‘Don’t cry for me after death, while in my life you didn’t provide me with my provisions.’

4) Abd-Allah Ibn Masud, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari & Ammar Ibn Yasir

Allamah al-Baladhuri mentioned :

Uthman ordered that Abd-Allah Ibn Masud to be thrown out of the masjid, Ibn Zam’ah threw Ibn Masud to the ground and Ibn Masud’s ribs were broken.

Ali said ‘O Uthman, why do you do this to the companion of Rasul-Allah ﷺ? based on what al-Walid Ibn Uqbah (Governor of Uthman in Kufa) said?’

Uthman replied ‘Rather, I sent Zubayd Ibn al-Salt to Kufa and Ibn Masud said to him that Killing Uthman is Halal.’

~Ansab al-Ashraf vol 6:147

Shihab al-Deen al-Nuwayri wrote :

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari said : Uthman forbade me from reading the Book of Allah and shame on those who abandon the command of Allah. I swear by Allah that pleasing Allah and displeasing Uthman is better than pleasing Uthman and displeasing Allah. So that angered Uthman.

Ibn Asakir narrated from Ibn Awn who said : As for Amr Ibn al-Hamq, he jumped on Uthman and sat on his chest while he was still breathing and stabbed him nine times and said ‘Three are for Allah and the six are for what I have in my heart against you.’

And there was a group of people from Egypt who hated Uthman and they disliked Ibn Abi Sarh.

~al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah vol 7:315

6) Muhammad the son of Abu Bakr

Ibn Sa’ad narrated :

Abd al-Rahman Ibn Muhammad narrated that :

Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr preceded them and grabbed Uthman’s beard and said ‘May Allah disgrace you, O Na’athal.’ Uthman replied ‘I am not Na’thal rather Abd-Allah & Emir al-Mu’meenin, then Muhammad said ‘Mu’awiyyah & So-and-so (Uqbah Ibn Aamir) will not help you.’ Uthman said ‘O son of my brother, leave my beard for your father would not hold what you’ve held.’

Muhammad replied ‘I do not want to harm you more than seizing your beard.’ Uthman said ‘I seek Allah’s help and victory over you.’ Then Muhammad Ibn Abi Bakr stabbed Uthman’s forehead with a dagger in his hand.
