Welcome to our Blog! In this article, we shall refute the Nawasib who praise Yazid and demonstrate what the scholars of Ilm al-Rijal said about him in the books of Ahl al-Sunnah.
1) Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (D.241 H)
Abu Bakr al-Khallal mentioned :
ثنا مهنا بن يحيى قال سألت أحمد عن يزيد بن معاوية فقال هو الذي فعل بالمدينة ما فعل، قلت وما فعل؟ قال نهنها، قلت فنذكر عنه الحديث قال لا يذكر عنه الحديث ولا ينبغي لأحد أن يكتب عنه حديثا،
Muhanna Ibn Yazid said : “I asked Ahmad Ibn Hanbal about Yazid, he replied ‘He did what he did in Madinah’, I asked what did he do? He replied ‘He looted Madinah.’
I asked him Shall we take any narrations from Yazid? He replied : ‘Don’t mention his narrations and it’s not right for anyone to take his Hadith.'”

• The Muhaqqiq of the book, Aatiyah al-Zahrani said The sanad is Sahih (إسناده صحيح)

• The Prophet ﷺ said :
حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ اللَّيْثِيُّ أَبُو ضَمْرَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ خُصَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي صَعْصَعَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ خَلَّادٍ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ : ” مَنْ أَخَافَ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ ظُلْمًا أَخَافَهُ اللَّهُ، وَعَلَيْهِ لَعْنَةُ اللَّهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةِ وَالنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَ، لَا يَقْبَلُ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ صَرْفًا وَلَا عَدْلًا
Whoever terrorizes the people of Medina with oppression, Allah will terrorize him. The curse of Allah, the angels, and the people altogether will be upon him. Allah will not accept his obligatory or voluntary good deeds on the Day of Resurrection.

•The Muhaqqiq of the book, Ahmad Muhammad Shaakir said : The Sanad is Sahih (إسناده صحيح)

• Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Haythami wrote :
بل قال أحمد بن حنبل بكفره
Rather, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal said : Yazid was a disbeliever.

2) Allamah Abu Ja’far Muhammad Ibn Jarir at-Tabari (D.310 H):
ﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﻪ، ﻟﻌﻨﻬﻤﺎ اﻟﻠﻪ
Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyyah, may Allah curse them both.
~Taarikh al-Tabari vol 11:535

3) Allamah Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi (D.456 H) said :
وَوَجَدْنَا يَزِيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، وَالْفَاسِقَ الْحَجَّاجَ قَدْ قَتَلَا فِيهِ النُّفُوسَ الْمُحَرَّمَةَ
We found that Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyyah and the Fasiq Hajjaj had killed those who were forbidden to kill.

4) Allamah Ibn Aqeel al-Hanbali (D.513 H) :
Allamah Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned :
قال ابن عقيل: و مما يدل على كفره و زندقته فضلا عن سبه و لعنه أشعاره التي أفصح بها بالإلحاد و أبان عن خبث الضمائر و سوء الاعتقاد
The evidence to Yazid’s Kufr & Heresy, along with the permissibility of cursing him are in his poetries in them he showed atheism and evil faith.

5) Allamah Sibt Ibn al-Jawzi (D.597 H) :
و حكى لي بعض اشياخنا عن ذلك اليوم: ان جماعة سألوا جدي عن يزيد فقال ما تقولون في رجل ولّي ثلاث سنين في السنة الأولى قتل الحسين في الثانية أخاف المدينة و اباحها و في الثالثة رمى الكعبة بالمجانيق و هدمها، فقالوا نلعن فقال فالعنوه.
Ibn al-Jawzi was asked about Yazid, that he was a man who killed al-Husayn, attacked Madinah & demolished the Ka’aba, can we curse him? He replied : ‘Yes, we curse him.’

•He wrote an entire book in refutation of Yazid named :
الرد علي المتعصب العنيد المانع من ذم يزيد
“The rejection of the Stubborn Fanatic who does not speak bad about Yazid.”
6) Allamah al-Qurtubi (D.671 H) :
والله أعلم يزيد بن معاوية، وعبيد الله بن زياد ومن تنزل منزلتهم من أحداث ملوك بني أمية، فقد صدر عنهم من قتل أهل بيت رسول ﷺ وسبيهم، وقتل خيار المهاجرين والأنصار بالمدينة وبمكة وغيرها
And Allah knows that Yazid ibn Mu’awiyyah & Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad & others of the Bani Umayyah killed the family of Rasul-Allah ﷺ & killed the righteous of the Muhajireen & Ansar in Madina & Makkah & other cities.

7) Allamah Ibn Khalikeen (D.681 H) :
ﻭﻫﻮ ﻭاﻟﻤﺘﺼﻴﺪ ﺑﺎﻟﻔﻬﻮﺩ ﻭﻣﺪﻣﻦ اﻟﺨﻤﺮ، ﻭﺷﻌﺮﻩ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺨﻤﺮ ﻣﻌﻠﻮﻡ،
He used to hunt beasts, drink alcohol and his poems about alcohol are known.

8) Allamah Ad-Dhahabi (D.748 H) :
ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﻧﺎﺻﺒﻴﺎ، ﻓﻈﺎ، ﻏﻠﻴﻈﺎ، ﺟﻠﻔﺎ، ﻳﺘﻨﺎﻭﻝ اﻟﻤﺴﻜﺮ، ﻭﻳﻔﻌﻞ اﻟﻤﻨﻜﺮ. اﻓﺘﺘﺢ ﺩﻭﻟﺘﻪ ﺑﻤﻘﺘﻞ اﻟﺸﻬﻴﺪ اﻟﺤﺴﻴﻦ، ﻭاﺧﺘﺘﻤﻬﺎ ﺑﻮاﻗﻌﺔ اﻟﺤﺮﺓ، ﻓﻤﻘﺘﻪ اﻟﻨﺎﺱ، ﻭﻟﻢ ﻳﺒﺎﺭﻙ ﻓﻲ ﻋﻤﺮﻩ
Yazid was a dirty nasibi, he drank & did evil. His kingdom started with the martyrdom of al-Husayn and ended with the incident of al-Harra. The people hated him & he wasn’t blessed.

• He also said Yazid isn’t worthy that his narrations should be taken
ﻟﻴﺲ ﺑﺄﻫﻞ ﺃﻥ ﻳﺮﻭﻯ ﻋﻨﻪ.
~Meezan al-Ae’tidal vol 4:440
9) Hafidh Ibn Kathir (D.774 H) :
ﻭﻗﺪ ﺃﺧﻄﺄ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﺧﻄﺄ ﻓﺎﺣﺸﺎ ﻓﻲ ﻗﻮﻟﻪ ﻟﻤﺴﻠﻢ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻘﺒﺔ ﺃﻥ ﻳﺒﻴﺢ اﻟﻤﺪﻳﻨﺔ ﺛﻼﺛﺔ ﺃﻳﺎﻡ، ﻭﻫﺬا ﺧﻄﺄ ﻛﺒﻴﺮ ﻓﺎﺣﺶ، ﻣﻊ ﻣﺎ اﻧﻀﻢ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻣﻦ ﻗﺘﻞ ﺧﻠﻖ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺼﺤﺎﺑﺔ ﻭﺃﺑﻨﺎﺋﻬﻢ، ﻭﻗﺪ ﺗﻘﺪﻡ ﺃﻧﻪ ﻗﺘﻞ اﻟﺤﺴﻴﻦ ﻭﺃﺻﺤﺎﺑﻪ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻳﺪﻱ ﻋﺒﻴﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﺯﻳﺎﺩ.
Yazid made a mistake and that too a heinous mistake, when he sent Muslim Ibn Uqbah to Madinah for three days, many Sahabah and their children were killed and as we mentioned al-Husayn & his companions were killed too by the hand of Ubayd-Allah Ibn Ziyad.

10) Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (D.852 H) :
ﻭﺃﻣﺎ اﻟﻤﺤﺒﺔ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻭاﻟﺮﻓﻊ ﻣﻦ ﺷﺄﻧﻪ ﻓﻼ ﺗﻘﻊ ﺇﻻ ﻣﻦ ﻣﺒﺘﺪﻉ ﻓﺎﺳﺪ اﻻﻋﺘﻘﺎﺩ ﻓﺈﻧﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺼﻔﺎﺕ ﻣﺎ ﻳﻘﺘﻀﻲ ﺳﻠﺐ اﻹﻳﻤﺎﻥ ﻋﻤﻦ ﻳﺤﺒﻪ ﻷﻥ اﻟﺤﺐ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻭاﻟﺒﻐﺾ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻣﻦ اﻹﻳﻤﺎﻥ ﻭاﻟﻠﻪ اﻟﻤﺴﺘﻌﺎﻥ
Loving or glorifying Yazid isn’t done except by an innovator who has corrupted beliefs because he has such a character that his lovers would lose faith because to love or hate for the sake of Allah is a part of faith.

•He also said Yazid isn’t worthy that his narrations should be taken
ﻟﻴﺲ ﺑﺄﻫﻞ ﺃﻥ ﻳﺮﻭﻯ ﻋﻨﻪ.

11) Hafidh Jalal ad-Deen al-Suyuti (D.911 H)
ﻟﻌﻦ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻗﺎﺗﻠﻪ ﻭاﺑﻦ ﺯﻳﺎﺩ ﻣﻌﻪ ﻭﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﺃﻳﻀﺎ
May Allah curse the killer of Husayn and Ibn Ziyad & YAZID.

12) Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Haythami (D.974 H) wrote :
اتِّفَاقهم على فسقه اخْتلفُوا فِي جَوَاز لَعنه بِخُصُوص اسْمه فَأَجَازَهُ قوم مِنْهُم ابْن الْجَوْزِيّ
The scholars agreed on the Fisq of Yazid but they differed on cursing him by name while some of them permitted cursing him like Ibn al-Jawzi.

13) Hafidh al-Manawi (D.1031 H) wrote :
وفي فتاوى حافظ الدين الكردي الحنفي لعن يزيد يجوز
In the Fatawa of Hafidh al-Deen al-Kurdi al-Hanafi, He permitted cursing Yazid.
قال ابن الكمال وحكى عن الإمام قوام الدين الصفاري ولا بأس بلعن يزيد
Ibn al-Kamal said and he narrated on the authority of Imam Qawam al-Deen al-Saffari, ‘There is nothing wrong with cursing Yazid.‘
قال المولى ابن الكمال والحق أن لعن يزيد على اشتهار كفره وتواتر فظاعته وشره على ما عرف بتفاصيله جائز
al-Mawla Ibn al-Kamal said : ‘The fact is that cursing Yazid is permissible considering his well known kufr and his crimes and evil.’

14) Qadhi al-Shawkani (D.1250 H) wrote :
وَلَقَدْ أَفْرَطَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ كَالْكَرَّامِيَّةِ وَمَنْ وَافَقَهُمْ فِي الْجُمُودِ عَلَى أَحَادِيثِ الْبَابِ حَتَّى حَكَمُوا بِأَنَّ الْحُسَيْنَ السِّبْطَ رضي الله عنه وَأَرْضَاهُ بَاغٍ عَلَى الْخِمِّيرِ السِّكِّيرِ الْهَاتِكِ لِحُرُمِ الشَّرِيعَةِ الْمُطَهَّرَةِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ لَعَنَهُمْ اللَّهُ،
Some scholars such as the Karamiyyah and their likes went extreme to the point that they said al-Husayn the grandson of Rasul-Allah ﷺ was a rebel as he went against the drunkard who violated the sharia’a, Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyyah may Allah curse them both.

15) Allamah al-Alusi (D.1270 H) :
ﺟﻮاﺯ ﻟﻌﻦ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ…ﻓﻬﻞ ﻋﺴﻴﺘﻢ ﺇﻥ ﺗﻮﻟﻴﺘﻢ ﺃﻥ ﺗﻔﺴﺪﻭا ﻓﻲ اﻷﺭﺽ ﻭﺗﻘﻄﻌﻮا ﺃﺭﺣﺎﻣﻜﻢ ﺃﻭﻟﺌﻚ اﻟﺬﻳﻦ ﻟﻌﻦﻫﻢ اﻟﻠﻪ….ﻭﺃﻱ ﻓﺴﺎﺩ ﻭﻗﻄﻴﻌﺔ ﺃﺷﺪ ﻣﻤﺎ ﻓﻌﻠﻪ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ اﻧﺘﻬﻰ
The permissibility to curse Yazid is from the verse of Allah ﷻ “So would you perhaps, if were given authority cause corruption in the world and cut of kinship, these are those whom Allah has cursed.” (Surah Muhammad 22-23) is there any bigger corruption than what Yazid caused?
