Part 2 : Those who authenticated it
Part 4 : Its origin in Sahih al-Bukhari
Part 5 : Chains of Transmission
Welcome to our Blog! In this article, we shall demonstrate the utter disrespect and blasphemy to The Prophet ﷺ in the Sunni literature, that Satan influenced him to praise the idols of the polytheists. We seek Allah’s refuge from such beliefs.
P.s : This will likely be a longer article than usual with many reputation but certainly beneficial for Ahl al-Ilm
Part 1 : The Incident
1) Allamah Abu Ja’far Muhammad Ibn Jareer at-Tabari mentioned :
Muhammad Ibn Ka’ab al-Qurazi said : “When Rasul-Allah ﷺ saw his people turning away from him, he was stressed because of that and he wished that Allah ﷻ would grant him something that would bring him closer to the people. Then Allah ﷻ revealed – ‘By the star when it goes down, your companion has neither strayed nor has erred nor does he speak from his inclination.’
When he reached {Have you considered al-Lat & al-Uzza & Manat?} then Satan put on his tongue as he was wishing to get closer to be people ‘These (al-Lat, al-Uzza and Manat) are the exalted ones and their intercession is hoped for.’ When the Quraysh heard it, they were delighted and pleased with the mention of their gods; they listened to him and did not accuse him.
When he prostrated, the Muslims prostrated and so did the polytheists for what they heard about their gods. al-Walid Ibn al-Mugheera, being an old man, took dust on his hand and prostrated on it. The polytheists were pleased, they said ‘Muhammad has mentioned our gods in the best way, He said they are exalted and their intercession is hoped for.'”
~Taarikh al-Tabari 2:338

2) Sa’eed Ibn Mansoor mentioned :
Muhammad Ibn Ka’ab said : “Rasul-Allah ﷺ was in a gathering of the Quraysh and he wished that no revelation should come to him that day but then Allah ﷻ revealed {By the star, when it goes down – your companion has neither strayed nor has erred} Rasul-Allah ﷺ kept reciting it until he reached {al-Lat, al-Uzza and al-Manat, the third} Then Satan whispered two words to him : ‘Those are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’
Rasul-Allah ﷺ recited the rest of the surah and prostrated and the people prostrated with him. al-Walid Ibn al-Mugheera (a staunch enemy of Islam) was an old man so he raised the dust to his forehead and they said ‘We know that Allah is the One who gives life and death, creates and provides but our gods intercede for us and since you, Muhammad, have given them a share, we are with you.'”
In the evening, Jibrael came to Rasul-Allah ﷺ and recited the surah to him, when he reached the words that Satan had thrown in, he said ‘I didn’t come to you with these words.’ Rasul-Allah ﷺ said ‘Have I lied against Allah and said about Allah what He did not say?’
~Sunan Sa’eed Ibn Mansoor vol 7:438-440

3) al-Baghawi mentioned :
Mujahid & Muqatil said : “When the Prophet ﷺ recited Surah al-Najm, then Satan put words to the Prophet ‘They are the exalted.’ so the Kuffar rejoiced.”
~Tafsir al-Baghawi 7:123

4) al-Qurtubi mentioned :
And when Allah is mentioned alone, the hearts of the disbeliever is disgusted but when those worshipped other than Allah are mentioned, they become happy.
~Surah al-Zumar 39:45
Abu Zayd said : When the Mushrik are told, ‘there is no god but Allah’, they run away and disbelieve but when when the idols are mentioned to them they get happy as when Satan whispered to the Prophet when he recited Surah al-Najm and said ‘Those are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’
~Tafsir al-Qurtubi 15:264

Part 2 : Those who authenticated it
1) Hafidh Abu Bakr al-Bazzar reported :
Yousuf Ibn Hammad narrated from Umayyah Ibn Khalid, who narrated from Shubah Ibn al-Hajjaj on the authority of Abu Bishr that Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr narrated that :
Ibn Abbas said : “The Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca and recited Surah al-Najm until he reached {Have you consider al-Lat & al-Uzza & Manah} then he said ‘These are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.‘ The Mushrikeen of Mecca heard it and were happy.
~Musnad al-Bazaar vol 11:296

• Allamah Nur ad-Deen al-Haythami said about this chain :
al-Bazaar & al-Tabarani narrated it with a narrator of al-Sahih
~Majmaa’ al-Zawa’id vol 7:115

The Sanad of Musnad al-Bazaar to Ibn Abbas is the Sanad of Bukhari & Muslim and its narrators are the narrators of al-Sahihayn, for reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 1383 & Sahih Muslim 2604 a

2) Hafidh Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi reported :
Ibn Abbas said : Rasul-Allah ﷺ recited Surah al-Najm and when he reached {Have you considered al-Lat & al-Uzza and Mannat} then Satan put through his tongue ‘These are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.‘ So when he prostrated, the Muslims and the Mushriks prostrated.
~al-Ahadith al-Mukhtara vol 10:89
•The Muhaqqiq of the book, Dr. Abd al-Malik Ibn Abd-Allah said in the footnote : The narrators are Trustworthy (رجاله ثقات)

• Hafidh al-Maqdisi compiled only Sahih Hadith in this book :
Allamah al-Suyuti said : Amongst those who compiled a Sahih book is Hafidh Diya al-Deen al-Maqdisi, who compiled a book called ‘al-Ahadith al-Mukhtara’, in which he has mentioned authentic narrations.
Allamah adh-Dhabhi said about this book that there are in it Hadiths which can be used as evidence other than Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
~Introduction of al-Mukhtara page 18

3) Abu al-Qasim al-Zamakhshari (D.537 H) wrote :
It was reported by Ibn Mardawayh from Abu Aasim al-Nabil on the Authority of Uthman Ibn al-Aswad from Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr what Ibn Abbas narrated, He did not doubt its connection and this is the most authentic part of this Hadith.
al-Tabari narrated it from Muhammad Ibn Ka’ab al-Qurazi & on the authority of Qatada & Abu al-Aaliyah, these are Mursal hadiths that strengthen each other.
The base of the story is in Sahih al-Bukhari with the wording : ‘The Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca and the Muslims, Mushrik, Jinns prostrated with him.’
~Tafsir al-Kashaf vol 3:165

4) Allamah Ibn Taymiyyah al-Harrani wrote :
And what was stated in Surah al-Najm, The Prophet ﷺ said ‘These are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’ This is famously well-known amongst the Salaf and the Khalaf that this was said by Him ﷺ then Allah ﷻ abrogated it.
~Minhaj al-Sunnah vol 2:409

5) Allamah Taj al-Deen al-Subki wrote :
The Wali should not think that he is free from the deception of Satan as long as he is alive, infact even the Prophets aren’t free from Satan until The Prophet ﷺ said : ‘They are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’
~Tabqat al-Shafiyyah al-Kubra vol 6:278

6) Allamah al-Manawi wrote :
Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani said in the Sharah of Sahih al-Bukhari : ‘This incident has been narrated through many chains which proves that the story has a basis, it has a connected (mutassil) chain with a Sahih Sanad which was narrated by al-Bazzar and two other chains which are Mursal and on the condition of al-Sahih.’
~al-Fath al-Samawi vol 2:843

7) Allamah Jalal al-Deen al-Suyuti mentioned :
Reported by al-Bazzar & al-Tabarani & Ibn Mardawayh & al-Diya in his al-Mukhtara with a Sanad of trustworthy (Thiqah) narrator from Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr who narrated that Ibn Abbas said :
“Rasul-Allah ﷺ recited {Have you considered al-Lat, al-Uzza and Mannat?} These are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for. So the polytheists were happy.”
And it is reported by Ibn Jareer at-Tabari & Ibn al-Mundhir & Ibn Abi Haatim & Ibn Mardawayh with a Sahih Sanad from Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr.
~al-Durr al-Manthoor vol 6:65

8) Abd al-Malik al-Makki said :
It was authenticated by a group of them, including Ibn Abi Hatim al-Raazi, al-Tabarani, and Ibn al-Mundhir, who transmitted it through various chains of narration and was reported by Ibn Mardawayh, al-Bazzar, Ibn Ishaq in al-Sirah, and Musa ibn Uqbah in al-Maghazi.
~Samt al-Nujoom vol 1:327

Part 3 : In the Wahhabi books
1) Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Najdi wrote :
The reason for this was that Rasul-Allah ﷺ recited Surah al-Najm and when he reached {Have you considered al-Lat, al-Uzza & Manat} Satan put upon his tongue, ‘They are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’ The Polytheists said ‘He did not mention our gods in a good way before. We know that Allah creates, provides, brings life and death but our gods intercede with Him.’
~Mukhtasar Seerat al-Rasool page 87

2) Sulayman Ibn Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab Aal’ Shaykh said :
This incident is famous and authentic and it is narrated by Ibn Abbas through various chains of transmission and some of them are Sahih. It was also narrated on the authority of the Tabiun with Sahih chains including Urwah Ibn al-Zubayr (nephew of A’isha), Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr, Abu al-Aaliyah, Abu Bakr Ibn Abd al-Rahman, Ikrimah, al-Dahhak, Qatadah, Muhammad Ibn Ka’ab al-Qurazi, Muhammad Ibn Qays al-Suddi, and others. It was also mentioned in the books of Seerah and others, and its base is in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
~Taysir al-Azeez al-Hameed fee Sharh Kitab at-Tawhid page 235

Part 4 : Its origin in Sahih al-Bukhari
There are two narrations in Sahih al-Bukhari 1071 & 1067 indicating this incident :
Ibn Abbas said : The Prophet ﷺ prostrated while reciting Surah al-Najm and the Muslims, polytheists, Jinns and Humans prostrated with him.
https://sunnah.com/bukhari:1071
Abd-Allah Ibn Masud said : The Prophet ﷺ recited Surah al-Najm in Mecca and prostrated and those who were around him did the same except an old man who took handful of pebbles and lifted to his forehead and said ‘This is sufficient for me.’
https://sunnah.com/bukhari:1067
1) Hafidh Ibn Battal wrote :
The polytheists prostrated not for the sake of worshipping Allah but rather it was because Satan mentioned their gods on the tongue of Rasul-Allah and he said, ‘al-Lat, al-Uzza and Mannat, those are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’ So they prostrated when they heard the praise of their gods and when Rasul-Allah found what Satan put on this tongue, he was saddened by it.
~Sharah Sahih al-Bukhari vol 3:57

2) Ibn al-Mullaqin wrote :
The Mushrikeen prostration was not to worship Allah but rather because Satan mentioned their gods on the tongue of Rasul-Allah ﷺ
~al-Tawdhih fee Sharh al-Jami al-Sahih vol 8:400

3) Najm al-Deen al-Tufi (D.716 H) said :
The reason for the prostration of the polytheists was because they thought the Prophet ﷺ agreed with them in praising their gods & their religion had become one and they prostrated to their gods to praise them for what they heard of their praise.
~al-Intisarat al-Islamiyyah vol 1:397

•He was a student of Ibn Taymiyyah
4) Mazhar al-Deen al-Zaydani al-Hanafi wrote :
The reason why the polytheists agreed with Rasul-Allah ﷺ in prostrating in the recitation of Surah al-Najm is that Rasul-Allah ﷺ recited ‘These are the exalted and their intercession is hoped for.’ So, the polytheists were happy.
~al-Mafatih fee Sharah al-Masabih vol 2:201

Part 5 : Chains of Transmission
It is narrated by various chains to Abd-Allah Ibn Abbas & it is reported by many Tabiun in its Mursal form, We shall mention some of its chain below :
1) Abu Bakr al-Bazzar mentioned :
Yousuf Ibn Hammad narrated from Umayyah Ibn Khalid who narrated from Shubah Ibn al-Hajjaj on the authority of Abu Bishr that Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr reported from Abd-Allah Ibn Abbas.
~Musnad al-Bazaar vol 11:296
• We have already mentioned this Sanad in detail above.
2) Allamah Abu Ja’far at-Tabari mentioned :
al-Qasim Ibn al-Hasan narrated from al-Husayn Ibn Dawood who narrated from Hajjaj Ibn Muhammad that Abu Ma’ashar narrated on the authority of Muhammad Ibn Ka’ab al-Qurazi and Muhammad Ibn Qays.
