Part One : His father’s name is my father’s name
Part Two : al-Mahdi al-Abbasi portrayed as the awaited Mahdi
Part Three : Imam Mahdi is from the progeny of Imam al-Husayn
Welcome to our Blog! The identity of Imam al-Mahdi is often linked to the claim that he must be named Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah. This article argues that the hadith explicitly stating this name is weak and represents an unpreserved addition. Based on hadith criticism and historical transmission, we maintain that the Mahdi is the Twelfth Imam, the son of Imam Hasan al-Askari, from the progeny of Imam al-Husayn.
Part One : His father’s name is my father’s name
1) Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated :
al-Fadhl Ibn Dukayn narrated from Fitr Ibn Khalifah that Aasim Ibn Abi al-Najud narrated on the authority of Zirr that Abd-Allah Ibn Masud said that Rasul-Allah ﷺ said :
“The world will not end until Allah sends a man from my family whose name is my name and his father’s name is my father’s name.”
~Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah vol 21:402
• Muhaqqiq of the book, Nasir Ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Shathri said in the footnote :
Sanad is weak due to Aasim’s weakness in narrating from Zirr.
~Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah vol 12:402

This Hadith is also recorded by Abu Dawood in his Sunan from Abd-Allah Ibn Masud and all its variants are narrated via Aasim Ibn Abi al-Najud, whose status is weak when he narrates alone.
Aasim was a prominent Qur’an reciter, known for the widely transmitted Qiraat of Hafs aan Aasim, yet he was weak in narrating Hadiths. As Ibn Khaldoon mentioned :
al-Ijli said : There is a disagreement on Aasim’s narrations from Zirr & Abu Wa’il, which indicates the weakness of his narrations from them.
Muhammad Ibn Sa’ad said : Aasim was Thiqah (In Qirat) but made many mistakes in his Hadiths.
Yaqoub Ibn Sufyan al-Fasawi said : There is inconsistency in his Hadith.
Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi said, I told my father (Abu Haatim al-Raazi) that Abu Zura’a al-Raazi says that ‘Aasim is Thiqah’, he replied ‘This is not the case.’
Ibn Ulayyah said : Every Aasim has a poor memory.
al-Nisaii’s opinion of him differed.
Ibn Harrash said his Hadith was rejected
al-Uqayli said : He was okay except for his bad memory
al-Daraqutni said : There was something wrong with his memory
Yahya Ibn Sa’eed al-Qattan said : I haven’t found an Aasim who doesn’t have a bad memory.
~Muqaddamah Ibn Khaldoon vol 1:390

Hafidh Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali mentioned :
al-Marwazi narrated that Yahya Ibn Ma’in said, “Every Aasim is weak.”
~Sharh Ilal al-Tirmidhi vol 2:875

Allamah al-Dhabhi mentioned :
Aasim Ibn Abi al-Najud wasn’t a memoriser of Hadith and al-Daraqutni said he had a bad memory.
~al-Mughni fee al-Du’afa vol 1:458

These critics show that Aasim Ibn Abi al-Najud was considered weak in narrating Hadith because of poor memory. He was known to add/mix wordings and sometimes alter the names of his teachers. This constitutes a Jarh Mufassar (reasoned criticism), and later hadith scholars reflected this judgment in practice by not relying on his solitary reports. As Shaykh Sulayman Ibn Nasser al-Alwan wrote :
As for Aasim, there is a strong disagreement about him. Some consider him completely weak, while some accept him.
The correct view is that his narration is to be accepted, but with conditions and the foremost condition is that he must not be alone in narrating; if that’s the case, then it is known that it has been narrated due to his errors.
~Sharah Maoqizah li-Dhabhi page 20

• Only Aasim narrates the part about the Mahdi’s father’s name; all other narrations mention only that the Mahdi’s name is the same as the Prophet’s.
• Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah, who narrated this from Aasim mentions that Aasim himself narrated this Hadith mostly without mentioning the name of his father as Hafidh Nu’aym Ibn Hammad narrated :
Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah narrated from Aasim that Zirr narrated from Abd-Allah Ibn Masud who narrated from the Prophet ﷺ :
al-Mahdi, His name is my name and his father’s name is my father’s name.
Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah said ‘I heard this Hadith multiple times without mentioning the name of his father.’
~al-Fitan 1076

Other than this, Aasim was known to add wordings in narrations. Allamah Ibn Abd al-Barr al-Andalusi, while discussing a Hadith with an addition, mentioned :
None other than Aasim added the statement and he was considered to have poor memory and made many mistakes.
~al-Tamhid vol 1:615

Similarly, Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni mentioned :
Perhaps this difference comes from Aasim, who sometimes made mistakes in Hadith due to his poor memory.
~al-Tasliyyah al-Kadhim page vol 3:139

2) Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani narrated :
Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Sadaqa narrated from Muhammad Ibn Yahya al-Azdi that Dawood Ibn al-Muhabbar Ibn Qahdham narrated from his father that Mu’awiyyah Ibn Qurrah narrated from his father
The earth will be filled with injustice and oppression as it was filled with justice and equity, until Allah sends a man from me whose name is my name and whose father’s name is my father’s name.
~al-Mujam al-Kabir li-Tabarani vol 19:32

• This is the second Hadith quoted in this topic from Qurrah Ibn Iyas al-Muzani but it is narrated via Dawood Ibn al-Muhabbar and his father, both of them are weak. Allamah Nur ad-Deen al-Haythami commented on this narration :
It was narrated by al-Bazaar & al-Tabarani from Dawood Ibn al-Muhabbar Ibn Qahdham, narrating from his father and both of them are weak.
~Majmaa’ al-Zawa’id vol 7:314

Part Two : al-Mahdi al-Abbasi portrayed as the awaited Mahdi
There was a clear political effort to promote this hadith, as both Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah al-Hasani and Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah al-Abbasi, the son of Abu Ja’far al-Mansur, were presented by their political supporters as candidates for the Mahdi claim.
1) Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi’i al-Qazwini wrote :
Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah al-Abbasi, Abu Abd-Allah al-Mahdi, the leader of the believers.
It is narrated by Aasim through Abu Wa’il who narrated from Zirr that Abd-Allah Ibn Masud said that Rasul-Allah ﷺ said :
‘al-Mahdi, His name is my name and his father’s name is my father’s name.’
It is as if he was referring to this Hadith.
~al-Tadveen fee Akhbar Qazwin vol 1:431

2) Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned :
Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said, ‘From us comes al-Mansour, al-Saffah & al-Mahdi.‘
This is also narrated from al-Dahhak from Ibn Abbas on the authority of Rasul-Allah ﷺ Marfoo’ but the Maukoof narration from Ibn Abbas is more correct.
And It is narrated from Abd-Allah Ibn Masud that the Prophet ﷺ said : ‘The Mahdi, His name is my name and his father’s name is my father’s name.’
al-Muntazam fee Taarikh al-Maluk wa al-Ummam vol 8:205-206

• ‘From us’ in this Hadith means from the Abbasids; this report was mentioned under al-Mahdi al-Abbasi.
3) Abu Mansour al-Baghdadi mentioned :
And al-Mugheera Ibn Sa’eed al-Ijli would say to his companions that : Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah Ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna Ibn al-Hasan al-Mujtaba Ibn Ali is the awaited Mahdi, that is evident by the fact that his name is Rasul-Allah’s name and his father’s name is Rasul-Allah’s father’s name.
~al-Farq bayn al-Firaq page 43

4) Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani mentioned :
Abd al-Malik Ibn Shayban said : The masses were obsessed with Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah al-Hasani, calling him the Mahdi.
Sahl Ibn Bishr said I heard Sufyan ath-Thawri say : ‘I wish this Mahdi came out, meaning Muhammad Ibn Abd-Allah al-Hasani.’
~Maqatil al-Talibiyyin page 184

5) Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani mentioned :
Abd-Allah Ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna said ‘Let us pledge allegiance to the Mahdi, Muhammad, my son.’ Imam Ja’far Ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq said : ‘Do not do this for the matter (Advent of Imam Mahdi) has not yet come, meaning if you believe this son of yours is the Mahdi, then he is not.’
~Maqatil al-Talibiyyin page 186

Part Three : Imam Mahdi is from the progeny of Imam al-Husayn
1) Abu Ubayd al-Harrawi (d.401 H) mentioned :
In a Hadith, Imam Ali said : al-Mahdi is from the progeny of al-Husayn.
~al-Gharibayn fee al-Qur’an wa al-Hadith vol 3:844

2) Yusuf Ibn Zaki al-Deen al-Maqdisi al-Shafi’i (d.658 H) mentioned :
Hudafyah Ibn al-Yaman said : Rasul-Allah ﷺ addressed us and then said ‘Even if one day remains of this world, Allah ﷻ will send forth a man from my progeny whose name is my name.’
Salman al-Farsi asked ‘Ya Rasul-Allah ﷺ, through which descendants will he be?’ He ﷺ pointed towards al-Husayn and said ‘Through him.’
This was narrated by al-Hafidh Abu Nu’aym al-Isfahani in his book ‘Sifat al-Mahdi.’
~Iqd al-Durar fee Akhbar al-Muntadhar page 82-83

• In the introduction of the book, Yusuf Ibn Zaki al-Deen al-Maqdisi al-Shafi’i said :
I sought Allah’s guidance and complied in this book with whatever was feasible & available of the narrations regarding al-Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar, including his name, his kunyah, his physical appearance and his appearance.
These narrations are from what the Ummah has transformed through connected chains and what the Imams of Hadiths have preserved in their well-relied-upon books. I have omitted the Sanad in this book, even tho the Sanad has already been examined and received as acceptable.
~Iqd al-Durar fee Akhbar al-Muntadhar page 65

3) Hafidh al-Kanji al-Shafi’i mentioned :
al-Hafidh Abu al-Hajjaj al-Damashqi narrated from Abu al-Fath al-Sarraj who narrated from Abu Taahir al-Salafi who narrated from Shaykh Ahl al-Hadith al-Hafidh al-Daraqutni who narrated from Ahmad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Sa’eed who narrated from Ibrahim Ibn Muhammad Ibn Yazid who narrated from Sahl Ibn Sulayman on the authority of Abu Haroon al-Abdi who said :
I was with Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri and I asked him : ‘Did you witness the battle of Badr?’ He affirmed, then I asked him ‘Won’t you narrate to us Hadith from Rasul-Allah ﷺ about Ali & his virtues?’
Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri narrated from Rasul-Allah ﷺ that he said ‘From us is the Mahdi, behind whom shall Isa Ibn Maryam pray.’ Then he patted the back of al-Husayn and said ‘From him is the Mahdi.’
~al-Bayan fee Akhbar Sahib al-Zaman page 501-502

• This chain has been transmitted through four grand Imams of the Shafi’i Madhab, consecutively, the likes of Abu al-Hajjaj al-Damishqi > Hafidh al-Sarraj > Hafidh Abu Taahir al-Salafi > Hafidh al-Daraqutni
• Amongst the unique methodological features of the Shāfiʿī madhhab is the view that if a narration is transmitted through more than three Imams in succession, it ought to be accepted
• Critics claim Hafidh al-Kanji al-Shafi’i was a Shi’i. Still, he was on the Aqeedah of the Jamaah and he was a Muhadith & Faaqih as Allamah Abu Shama al-Maqdisi said :
al-Fakhr Muhammad Ibn Yusuf al-Kanji was a Scholar in Fiqh & Hadith.
~Tarajim Rijal al-Qazwin page 208

al-Safadi al-Shafi’i mentioned :
Muhammad Ibn Yusuf al-Kanji, He was an Imam and Muhadith, but he was inclined towards the Rafidah.
~al-Wafi bil-Wafayat vol 5:166

4) Hafidh Ibn Asakir mentioned :
al-Husayn Ibn Nashr al-Musalli narrated from Abu Bakr al-Muzaffar who narrated from Abu Muhammad al-Hasan Ibn Muhammad al-Khallal who narrated from Abu Hafs Umar Ibn Ahmad (Ibn Shaheen) who narrated from Abd al-Baqi Ibn Qani’ who narrated from Muhammad Ibn Zakariyyah al-Ghalabi who narrated from Shuayb Ibn Waqid who narrated from Sa’eed Ibn Muhammad al-Juhni on the authority of Abu Zubayr who said :
We were with Jaabir Ibn Abd-Allah al-Ansari & then Ali Ibn al-Husayn & his son entered. So, Jaabir asked Ali Ibn al-Husayn, ‘Who is this, O son of Rasul-Allah?’
He replied ‘This is my son, Muhammad (al-Baqir).’
Jaabir hugged Muhammad & wept and said ‘My death is near. O Muhammad, know that Rasul-Allah ﷺ conveys his Salaam to you.’
Muhammad al-Baqir asked ‘How is that?’
Jaabir replied I heard Rasul-Allah ﷺ say to ‘al-Husayn that a son will be born from you and he is Sayyid al-Abideen’, and that is your father (Ali Ibn al-Husayn) and from him, a son will be born named Muhammad.
Jaabir further said Rasul-Allah ﷺ told me that when you meet him, convey my Salaam to him and know that al-Mahdi is from his descendants.
~Taarikh Damishq vol 54:276

• This has been transmitted via the grand Imams of Shafi’i & Hanafi Madhab like : al-Husayn Ibn Nashr al-Musalli > Abu Bakr al-Muzaffar > Abu Muhammad al-Khallal al-Husayni > Ibn Shaheen > Ibn Qani’ al-Hanafi
• This narration has been criticized because of Muhammad Ibn Zakariyyah al-Ghalabi but there is no Jarh’ Mufassar on him. Ibn Asakir himself called his Hadiths of Hasan status :
Muhammad Ibn Zakariyyah al-Ghalabi, his Hadiths are Hasan.
~Taarikh Damishq vol 13:117

• Other than that, Muhammad Ibn Zakariyyah al-Ghalabi has been authenticated by : Diya al-Deen al-Maqdisi (Sahib al-Mukhtara), Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani, Abu Sa’eed Ibn al-Arabi, Ibn Hibban, Abu Nu’aym al-Isfahani, al-Ajurri, al-Haakim (compiler of al-Mustadarak) and etc.
• Hafidh al-Daraqutni & Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani weakened him but mentioned no reasons.
Thank you for reading! In the following article, we will present the testimony of Sunni scholars concerning the birth of a son to Imam al-Hasan al-Askari, named Muhammad. We ask Allah to grant us sincerity and devotion, and to enable us to offer our lives and all that we possess in service to the Master of this age.
