Welcome to our blog! This article explores the practice of Umar and Uthman praying Maghrib first and then breaking their fast.
1) Malik Ibn Anas narrated :
Humayd Ibn Abd al-Rahman Ibn Awf said :
Umar Ibn al-Khattab & Uthman Ibn Affan would pray Maghreb first when they saw the night darkening, and after praying, they would break their fast in the month of Ramadan.
~Muwatta Malik, Riwayah Yahya vol 1:240-241

This narration is Sahih as mentioned by –
2) Allamah al-Nawawi said :
Malik, al-Shafi’i & al-Bayhaqi narrated it with their Sahih chains from Humayd Ibn Abd al-Rahman Ibn Awf.
~al-Majmu’ Sharh al-Muhadhab vol 6:361

3) Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari said :
This Hadith is Sahih as reported by Malik.
~al-Shafi fee Sharh Musnad al-Shafi’i vol 3:199

4) Mulla Ali al-Qaari said :
As for what is authentic about Umar & Uthman, that during Ramadan they would pray Maghreb, then would break their fast.
~Mirqat al-Mafatih vol 4:486

•Abd al-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri said similarly in Tuhfat al-Awadhi vol 3:311

It is said that the narration of Humayd Ibn Abd al-Rahman Ibn Awf from Umar & Uthman is Mursal, as he did not meet them, but Humayd himself mentions that he saw them doing this –
5) Abu Ja’far al-Tahavi narrated :
Humayd Ibn Abd al-Rahman said : I saw Umar & Uthman during Ramadan, praying Maghreb when the darkness was visible, and then breaking their fast.
~Sharh Ma’ani al-Athar vol 2:74
• Muhaqqiq of the book, Shaykh Lateef al-Rahman al-Qasmi al-Bahraichi said :
The Sanad is Sahih (إسناده صحيح)

6) Shaykh Mansoor Abd al-Hameed, commented in the footnote of Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi :
The chain is Sahih; it is reported by Malik. This chain is Sahih even if it is said that Humayd didn’t meet Umar. This isn’t right, as from my research, Humayd’s narrations from Umar are proven.
~al-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Bayhaqi vol 2:24
