Imam al-Mahdi: Sunni Scholarship on His Birth to Imam Hasan al-Askari

Welcome to our Blog! In this article, we present what many Sunni scholars and historians have recorded regarding the birth of a son named Muhammad to Imam Hasan al-Askari. Our focus here is solely on the testimony affirming his existence in the Sunni books, without entering into debates about whether they attested that he was the Mahdi or not. While we testify that this son is Imam al-Mahdi.

1) al-Masoodi (d.345 H) wrote :

وفي سنة ستين ومائتين قبض أبو محمد الحسن بن علي في خلافة المعتمد، وهو ابن تسع وعشرين سنة، وهو أبو المهدي المنتظر، والإمام الثاني عشر عند القطعية من الإمامية

In the year 260, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan Ibn Ali (al-Askari) passed away during the caliphate of al-Mu’tamid al-Abbasi. He was 29 years old when he passed away. He was the father of al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar, and according to the Imamiyyah, he was the twelfth Imam.

~Murooj al-Dhahbh vol 4:160

2) Hafidh Ibn Kathir al-Damishqi wrote :

Yahya Ibn Salama, Abu al-Fadhl al-Shafi’i al-Haskafi (d.553 H), was an Imam in many Uloom, including Fiqh & literature, and he was a poet.

ﺛﻢ ﺧﺮﺝ ﻣﻦ ﻫﺬا اﻟﺘﻐﺰﻝ ﺇﻟﻰ ﻣﺪﺡ ﺃﻫﻞ اﻟﺒﻴﺖ ﻭاﻷﺋﻤﺔ اﻻﺛﻨﻲ ﻋﺸﺮ : ﻭﺳﺎﺋﻠﻲ ﻋﻦ ﺣﺐ ﺃﻫﻞ اﻟﺒﻴﺖ … ﻫﻞ ﺃﻗﺮ ﺇﻋﻼﻧﺎ ﺑﻪ ﺃﻡ ﺃﺟﺤﺪ؟ ﻫﻴﻬﺎﺕ ﻣﻤﺰﻭﺝ ﺑﻠﺤﻤﻲ ﻭﺩﻣﻲ … ﺣﺒﻬﻢ ﻭﻫﻮ اﻟﻬﺪﻯ ﻭاﻟﺮﺷﺪ ﺣﻴﺪﺭﺓ ﻭاﻟﺤﺴﻨﺎﻥ ﺑﻌﺪﻩ … ﺛﻢ ﻋﻠﻲ ﻭاﺑﻨﻪ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﻭﺟﻌﻔﺮ اﻟﺼﺎﺩﻕ ﻭاﺑﻦ ﺟﻌﻔﺮ … ﻣﻮﺳﻰ ﻭﻳﺘﻠﻮﻩ ﻋﻠﻲ اﻟﺴﻴﺪ ﺃﻋﻨﻲ اﻟﺮﺿﻰ ﺛﻢ اﺑﻨﻪ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ … ﺛﻢ ﻋﻠﻲ ﻭاﺑﻨﻪ اﻟﻤﺴﺪﺩ ﻭاﻟﺤﺴﻦ اﻟﺜﺎﻧﻲ ﻭﻳﺘﻠﻮ ﺗﻠﻮﻩ … ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺤﺴﻦ اﻟﻤﻔﺘﻘﺪ ﻓﺈﻧﻬﻢ ﺃﺋﻤﺘﻲ ﻭﺳﺎﺩﺗﻲ

Then al-Haskafi started to praise the Ahl al-Bayt & the twelve Imams in his poems : ‘And ask me about the love of the Ahl al-Bayt, shall I declare it or deny? Their love has mingled with my flesh and blood. They are the Imams of guidance and righteousness :

They are – Haydar and al-Hasnaan and then Ali then his son Muhammad and Ja’far al-Sadiq and the son of Ja’far, Musa, followed by Ali, our master; that is al-Ridha, then his son Muhammad, then Ali and his son al-Hasan followed by Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan. These are my Imams and my masters.

He was born in Madinah and moved to Samarrah; similarly, his son – al-Hasan Ibn Ali. That’s why they are called the Askariyyen. Ali died in Rajab of 254 and al-Hasan died in the year 260. As for his mother, her name is Narjis from the descendants of the Hawariyyun. It is also said he was born in Arabia.

The Shiite claim that the Mahdi is Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan al-Askari, this is nonsense because Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan al-Askari died and his uncle Ja’far took over the inheritance of his father al-Hasan.

~Lawami’ al-Anwar al-Bahiyah vol 2:71

Thank you for reading! We have gathered many more references on this subject, which we hope to present in a future part—if Allah grants us the life and opportunity. In this article, however, we have demonstrated through the testimonies of numerous Sunni scholars and historians that a son named Muhammad was indeed born to the noble Imam al-Hasan al-Askari in the year 255 AH. Thus, the claim that the existence of the Imam of the Rafidah is merely a “myth” is clearly contradicted by the very records of Sunni scholarship itself.
