Welcome to our Blog! With the 19th of the month of Ramadan approaching, let us reflect on the fact that Aisha fought against Imam Ali and intended to have him killed in the Battle of Jamal. After he was martyred, she expressed satisfaction, and after his demise she avoided mentioning him in a positive way
Part One : Aisha hated mentioning Imam Ali in a positive way
1) Ahmad Ibn Hanbal mentioned :
قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ: وَأَخْبَرَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ قَالَتْ: أَوَّلُ مَا اشْتَكَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَيْتِ مَيْمُونَةَ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَ أَزْوَاجَهُ أَنْ يُمَرَّضَ فِي بَيْتِهَا، فَأَذِنَّ لَهُ. قَالَتْ: فَخَرَجَ وَيَدٌ عَلَى الْفَضْلِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَيَدٌ عَلَى رَجُلٍ آخَرَ، وَهُوَ يَخُطُّ بِرِجْلَيْهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ، قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللهِ: فَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، فَقَالَ: أَتَدْرِي مَنِ الرَّجُلُ الْآخَرُ الَّذِي لَمْ تُسَمِّ عَائِشَةُ؟ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ، وَلَكِنَّ عَائِشَةَ لَا تَطِيبُ لَهُ نَفْسًا
Ubayd-Allah Ibn Abd-Allah Ibn Utbah narrated that A’isha said : Initially, when Rasul-Allah ﷺ felt ill, he was in the house of Maymoonah. Then he asked permission to be moved to my house. He was carried out, one of his hands was upon al-Fadhl Ibn Abbas, and the other hand on another man.
Ubayd-Allah said I mentioned this narration to Ibn Abbas, and he replied : Do you know who the other man was whom A’isha did not name? It was Ali, but A’isha didn’t like to mention him.

The Sanad is Sahih on the condition of Bukhari & Muslim
2) Allamah al-Baladhuri mentioned :
عن محمد بن إسحاق، عن الزهري، عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله بن عتبة فحدثت ابن عباس بهذا الحديث، فقال: أتدري من الآخر: قلت: لا. قال: عليّ، ولكنها لا تقدر أن تذكره بخير وهي تستطيع.
Muhammad Ibn Ishaq narrated that al-Zuhri narrated from Ubayd-Allah Ibn Abd-Allah Ibn Utbah that he mentioned this narration to Ibn Abbas and he said :
‘Do you know the other man? It was Ali, but A’isha does not like to speak good about him even tho she can.’

3) Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani mentioned :
فقال: لا يجوز أن يظن ذلك بعائشة، ورد على من زعم أنها أبهمت الثاني لكونه لم يتعين في جميع المسافة إذ كان تارة يتوكأ على الفضل وتارة على أسامة وتارة على علي، وفي جميع ذلك الرجل الآخر هو العباس، واختص بذلك إكراما له، وهذا توهم ممن قاله والواقع خلافه، لأن ابن عباس في جميع الروايات الصحيحة جازم بأن المبهم علي فهو المعتمد والله أعلم. ودعوى وجود العباس في كل مرة والذي يتبدل غيره مردودة بدليل رواية عاصم التي قدمت الإشارة إليها وغيرها صريح في أن العباس لم يكن في مرة ولا في مرتين منها
al-Kirmani said : This narration is a refutation of those who say It is not permissible to think that of A’isha. Those who claimed that she skipped the second name because the second person was not fixed, sometimes it was al-Fadhl, sometimes Usama and sometimes Ali, but al-Abbas was constant in all situations.
But this is a mistaken assumption of those who said it. The reality is otherwise because Ibn Abbas, in all authentic narrations, is sure that the unnamed person was Ali.
And the claim that al-Abbas was present every time is refuted by Aasim’s narration, which mentions that al-Abbas was only present once or twice.

• In short, al-Kirmani attested that there is no excuse for not thinking that Aisha had something in her heart against Imam Ali.
4) Ahmad Ibn Hanbal mentioned:
عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، قَالَ: جَاءَ رَجُلٌ، فَوَقَعَ فِي عَلِيٍّ وَفِي عَمَّارٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا عِنْدَ عَائِشَةَ، فَقَالَتْ: أَمَّا عَلِيٌّ، فَلَسْتُ قَائِلَةً لَكَ فِيهِ شَيْئًا، وَأَمَّا عَمَّارٌ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، يَقُولُ: ” لَا يُخَيَّرُ بَيْنَ أَمْرَيْنِ، إِلَّا اخْتَارَ أَرْشَدَهُمَا
Aata’ Ibn Yasar said : A man came to A’isha and spoke badly about Ali & Ammar. She said ‘As for Ali, I will not say anything about him. As for Ammar, I heard Rasul-Allah ﷺ say “Ammar wasn’t given a choice except he choose the righteous path.”‘

5) Allamah al-Baladhuri mentioned :
حدثني الحسين بن الأسود، عن يحيى بن آدم، عن شريك وغيره، ومضى إلى الحجاز بمقتل علي سفيان بن أمية بن أبي سفيان بن أمية بن عبد شمس ولا ينعيه له فلما بلغ عائشة خبره أنشدت قول البارقي: فألقت عصاها واستقرت بها النوى … كما قرّ عينا بالإياب المسافر
al-Husayn Ibn al-Aswad narrated from Yahya Ibn Adam that Shaarik al-Qadhi and others said :
The news of the death of Ali Ibn Abi Talib was brought by Sufyan Ibn Umayyah Ibn Abi Sufyan in Hejaz. When the news reached A’isha, she recited the poet of al-Bariqi :
‘She cast down her staff and settled there, just as the traveler’s eye gets happy by finding the adobe.’

6) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari mentioned :
ولما انتهى إِلَى عَائِشَة قتل علي قالت: فألقت عصاها واستقرت بِهَا النوى … كما قر عينا بالإياب المسافر .. فَقَالَتْ زينب ابنة أبي سلمة: ألعلي تقولين هَذَا؟ فَقَالَتْ: إني أنسى، فإذا نسيت فذكروني
When the news of Ali’s death reached A’isha, she said ‘She cast down her staff and settled there, just as the traveler’s eye gets happy by finding the adobe.’
Zaynab Bint Umm Salamah asked ‘Are you saying this about Ali?’ Aisha replied ‘Did I forget? If I forgot, then remind me whom I was referring to.’

7) Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani mentioned :
حدّثني محمد بن الحسين الأشناني، قال: حدّثنا أحمد بن حازم، قال: حدّثنا عاصم بن عامر، وعثمان بن أبي شيبة، قالا: حدّثنا جرير، عن الأعمش، عن عمرو بن مرة، عن أبي البختري، قال: لما أن جاء عائشة قتل علي سجدت
Muhammad Ibn al-Husayn al-Ushnani narrated from Ahmad Ibn Hazim who narrated from Uthman Ibn Abi Shaybah who narrated from Jareer that al-Amash narrated from Amr Ibn Murrah that
Abu al-Bakhtari said : When the news of Ali’s death reached A’isha, she prostrated.

•Sanad is Sahih, all narrators are trustworthy.
Part Three : Aisha plotted to kill Imam Ali.
8) Allamah al-Baladuri mentioned :
وحدثني أحمد بن إبراهيم الدورقي، حدثنا أبو النضر، حدثنا إسحاق بن سعيد، عن عمرو بن سعيد، حدثني سعيد بن عمرو: عن ابن حاطب قال: أقبلت مع علي يوم الجمل إلى الهودج وكأنه شوك قنفذ من النبل، فضرب الهودج؛ ثم قال: إن حميراء إرم هذه أرادت أن تقتلني كما قتلت عثمان بن عفان
Ibn Haatib said : We were with Ali on the day of Jamal, and Ali said ‘Indeed Humairah (Aisha) wanted to kill me just like she wanted to kill Uthman.’

9) Ibn Abd Rabb al-Andalusi mentioned :
فقال: إيت هذه المرأة فلترجع إلى بيتها التي أمرها الله أن تقرّ فيه. قال: فجئت فاستأذنت عليها، فلم تأذن لي، فدخلت بلا إذن، ومددت يدي إلى وسادة في البيت فجلست عليها، فقالت: تالله يا بن عباس ما رأيت مثلك، تدخل بيتنا بلا إذننا، وتجلس على وسادتنا بغير أمرنا! فقلت: والله ما هو بيتك، وما بيتك إلا الذي أمرك الله أن تقرّي فيه فلم تفعلي! إنّ أمير المؤمنين يأمرك أن ترجعي إلى بلدك الذي خرجت منه. قالت: رحم الله أمير المؤمنين ذاك: عمر بن الخطاب! قلت: نعم، وهذا أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب. قالت: أبيت أبيت! قلت: ما كان إباؤك إلا فواق ناقة بكيئة ، ثم صرت ما تحلين ولا تمرّين، ولا تأمرين ولا تنهين! قال: فبكت حتى علا نشيجها، ثم قالت: نعم أرجع، فإنّ أبغض البلدان إليّ بلد أنتم فيه
Ibn Abbas narrated : Imam Ali commanded me after the battle of Jamal : ‘Go to this woman (A’isha) and ask her to return to her home, where Allah commanded her to reside.’
So I went to seek permission to enter her camp, but she rejected. I entered without permission, she said ‘I have never seen the like of you! You enter my house without my permission.’
Ibn Abbas replied ‘This is not your house, your house is only the one where Allah commanded you to reside (in Madinah) but you moved out of it.
Then he said ‘Emir al-Mu’meenin orders you to return to the land you came from.’ She replied : ‘May Allah have mercy on Umar al-Khattab, he was the Emir al-Mu’meenin.’ He said ‘Yes, this Emir al-Mu’meenin is Ali Ibn Abi Talib.’ She replied ‘I reject that!’
Then she wept and said ‘Yes, I will return for the most hateful place to me is the place you are in.’
