Lanah upon Mu’awiyyah from the Hadith

1) Part One : Ubayd-Allah Ibn Musa (D.213 H)

Abu Bakr al-Khallal mentioned –

ﺳﻤﻌﺖ ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﻴﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ اﻟﻤﻨﺎﺩﻱ، ﻳﻘﻮﻝ: ﻛﻨﺎ ﺑﻤﻜﺔ ﻓﻲ ﺳﻨﺔ ﺗﺴﻊ، ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﻣﻌﻨﺎ ﻋﺒﻴﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻮﺳﻰ، ﻓﺤﺪﺙ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻄﺮﻳﻖ ﻓﻤﺮ ﺣﺪﻳﺚ ﻟﻤﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ، ﻓﻠﻌﻦ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ، ﻭﻟﻌﻦ ﻣﻦ ﻻ ﻳﻠﻌﻨﻪ

I heard al-Munadi say: We were in Mecca with Ubayd-Allah ibn Musa and a hadith of Mu’awiyyah passed by.

So, he cursed Mu’awiyyah and cursed those who did not curse Mu’awiyyah.

• About him Allamah adh-Dhabhi said about him :

ﻋﺒﻴﺪ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻮﺳﻰ… اﻹﻣﺎﻡ اﻟﺤﺎﻓﻆ اﻟﻌﺎﺑﺪ…. ﺃﻭﻝ ﻣﻦ ﺻﻨﻒ اﻟﻤﺴﻨﺪ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺗﺮﺗﻴﺐ اﻟﺼﺤﺎﺑﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﻜﻮﻓﺔ،

Ubayd-Allah ibn Musa.. The Imam, The Hafidh, The Abid (regularly worshipping) He was the first to write a Musnad upon the category of the Sahabah in Kufa.

• also, a Trustworthy narrator of al-Sahihayn, Bukhari & Muslim and the other Sunan al-Arba’.

2) Part Two : Abd al-Razzaq al-Sinani (D.211 H)

Allamah adh-Dhabhi mentioned :

ﻛﻨﺖ ﻋﻨﺪ ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺮﺯاﻕ ﻓﺬﻛﺮ ﺭﺟﻞ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﻓﻘﺎﻝ: ﻻ ﺗﻘﺬﺭ ﻣﺠﻠﺴﻨﺎ ﺑﺬﻛﺮ ﻭﻟﺪ ﺃﺑﻲ ﺳﻔﻴﺎﻥ

A man visited Abd al-Razzaq al-Sinani and mentioned Mu’awiyyah, So, he replied :

‘Do not disgrace our gathering by mentioning the son of Abu Sufyan.’

Ibn Khalfun mentioned :

وقيل ليحيى بن معين: إن أحمد بن حنبل قال: إن عبيد الله بن موسى يترك حديثه للتشيع، قال: كان والله الذي لا إله إلا هو عبد الرزاق أعلى في ذلك منه مائة ضعف، ولقد سمعت من عبد الرزاق أضعاف وأضعاف ما سمعت من عبيد الله ابن موسى

It was said to Yahya ibn Ma’in that Ahmad ibn Hanbal said ‘The Hadith of Ubayd Allah ibn Musa is to be rejected due to his Shiism’ so, Yahya replied :

‘I swear by Allah, Abd al-Razzaq was a hundred times higher than Ubayd Allah (in Shiism) and I have heard a lot and lot more from Abd al-Razzaq (about Mu’awiyyah) than from Ubayd Allah ibn Musa.

• Abd al-Razzaq was a great Imam of Makkah and he wrote his Musannaf. In it, there are a great number of athar, and he is a major narrator of Hadith. If his hadith were taken out, a great number of narrations would be lost. He was the teacher of al-Bukhari & Muslim and their likes.

3) Part Three : Abu Ja’far Muhammad Ibn Jarir at-Tabari (D.310 H)

Allamah at-Tabari quoted :

اﻟﻠﻬﻢ اﻟﻌﻦ ﺃﺑﺎ ﺳﻔﻴﺎﻥ ﺑﻦ ﺣﺮﺏ، ﻭﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﻪ اﺑﻨﻪ، ﻭﻳﺰﻳﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﻪ، ﻭﻣﺮﻭاﻥ ﺑﻦ اﻟﺤﻜﻢ ﻭﻭﻟﺪﻩ، اﻟﻠﻬﻢ اﻟﻌﻦ اﺋﻤﻪ اﻟﻜﻔﺮ، ﻭﻗﺎﺩﻩ اﻟﻀﻼﻟﺔ، ﻭﺃﻋﺪاء اﻟﺪﻳﻦ، ﻭﻣﺠﺎﻫﺪﻯ اﻟﺮﺳﻮﻝ، ﻭﻣﻐﻴﺮﻯ اﻷﺣﻜﺎﻡ، ﻭﻣﺒﺪﻟﻲ اﻟﻜﺘﺎﺏ، ﻭﺳﻔﺎﻛﻰ اﻟﺪﻡ اﻟﺤﺮاﻡ

O Allah, curse Abu Sufyan & his son Mu’awiyyah & Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyyah and Marwan Ibn al-Hakam and his sons.

O Allah, curse these Imam al-Kufr, the leaders of misguidance, the enemies of the religion, the enemies of Rasul-Allah, they changed the rulings & the book, they shed the blood which shouldn’t be shed.

~Taarikh al-Tabari vol 10:62

At another place, Allamah at-Tabari wrote :

ﻭﺗﻮﻓﻰ ﺟﻌﻔﺮ ﻓﻲ ﻭﺳﻂ ﺧﻼﻓﻪ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﻪ ﻟﻌﻨﻪ اﻟﻠﻪ

Ja’far died in the middle of the Caliphate of Mu’awiyyah, May Allah curse him.

~Taarikh al-Tabari 11:529

• Allamah adh-Dhabhi said about him :

ﻛﺎﻥ ﺛﻘﺔ، ﺻﺎﺩﻗﺎ، ﺣﺎﻓﻈﺎ، ﺭﺃﺳﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺘﻔﺴﻴﺮ، ﺇﻣﺎﻣﺎ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻔﻘﻪ، ﻭاﻹﺟﻤﺎﻉ ﻭاﻻﺧﺘﻼﻑ، ﻋﻼﻣﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺘﺎﺭﻳﺦ ﻭﺃﻳﺎﻡ اﻟﻨﺎﺱ، ﻋﺎﺭﻓﺎ ﺑﺎﻟﻘﺮاءاﺕ ﻭﺑﺎﻟﻠﻐﺔ، ﻭﻏﻴﺮ ﺫﻟﻚ.

He was trustworthy, honest, and reliable. He is a lead in the exegesis of The Qur’an (because of his famous tafsir), He is an Imam of Fiqh, learned about the consensus and disagreements amongst the scholars, and he is a scholar of history. He was learned in Qiraat and the linguistic and more than that.

4) Part Four : Abu Sa’ad al-Raazi (D.421 H) wrote :

He wrote :

ﻣﺎ ﻗﻄﻌﻨﻲ ﺇﻻ ﻏﻼﻡ ﻗﺎﻝ ﻟﻲ: ﻣﺎ ﺗﻘﻮﻝ ﻓﻲ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ؟ ﻗﻠﺖ: ﺇﻧﻲ ﺃﻗﻒ ﻓﻴﻪ. ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻓﻤﺎ ﺗﻘﻮﻝ ﻓﻲ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ؟ ﻗﻠﺖ: ﺃﻟﻌﻨﻪ ﻟﻌﻨﻪ اﻟﻠﻪ. ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻓﻤﺎ ﺗﻘﻮﻝ ﻓﻴﻤﻦ ﻳﺤﺒﻪ؟ ﻗﻠﺖ: ﺃﻟﻌﻨﻪ. ﻗﺎﻝ: ﺃﻓﺘﺮﻯ ﻣﻌﺎﻭﻳﺔ ﻻ ﻳﺤﺐ ﻳﺰﻳﺪ اﺑﻨﻪ

I was cut off when a boy asked me ‘What do you say about Mu’awiyyah?’ I replied ‘I stop at him (don’t say anything about him)’

Then he asked ‘What do you say about Yazid?’ I replied ‘May Allah curse him’ Then he asked ‘What about those who love Yazid?’ I replied ‘They’re cursed’

He replied : ‘Do you think Mu’awiyyah didn’t love his own son Yazid?’
