Get down from the pulpit of my father

Welcome to our blog! In this article, we explore narrations in which Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba and Imam al-Husayn describe Abu Bakr and Umar as having usurped the pulpit of Rasul-Allah ﷺ, and affirm that their father, Imam Ali, was the rightful successor to the Prophet’s Minbar.

1) Ibn Sa’ad narrared :

Urwa Ibn al-Zubayr (grandson of Abu Bakr) reported that : Abu Bakr was reciting a sermon and al-Hasan Ibn Ali went to the Minbar and said, ‘Get down from the Minbar of my father.

Then Ali said, ‘This is something we are not involved in.’

~Tabqat Ibn Sa’ad vol 6:374

• This Sanad is Mursal from Urwah Ibn al-Zubayr, but most of his Maraseel are Sahih, as Hafidh al-Manawi commented on a Hadith and said :

al-Harith Ibn Abi Usamah reported this in his Musnad from Urwah Ibn al-Zubayr as a Mursal Hadith and they said It is a Sahih Mursal.

~Fayd al-Qadeer vol 3:575

• There are more instances where his Maraseel were called Sahih.

2) Allamah adh-Dhabhi mentioned :

Ubayd Ibn Hunayn narrated that : al-Husayn Ibn Ali said I went to the Minbar while Umar was on it and said, ‘Get down from the Minbar of my father and go to the Minbar of your father.’

Umar replied ‘My father does not have a Minbar.’ Then he placed me next to him and asked ‘My son, who taught you this?’ I replied, ‘No one.’

Then Umar said ‘My son, did anyone after Allah cause hair to grow on our heads? Please visit us more often, my son.’

~Siyar Alam an-Nubala vol 3:285

• Allamah adh-Dhabhi said :

The Sanad is Sahih.

• Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani commented :

al-Khateeb al-Baghdadi narrated it with a Sahih Sanad.

~Tahdheeb al-Tahdheeb vol 2:346

• Allamah al-Suyuti said :

The Sanad is Sahih.

3) Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni narrated :

Ja’far al-Sadiq narrated from Muhammad al-Baqir that Zayn al-Abideen said :

Umar Ibn al-Khattab was on the Minbar, and al-Husayn Ibn Ali went to him and said ‘Get down from the Minbar of my father’

Umar replied : By Allah, it is your father’s pulpit and my father has no pulpit. Then Ali said ‘I did not order him this.’ Umar replied, ‘We do not accuse you.’

~Fadhail al-Sahabah page 34-35

Thank you for reading! In conclusion, we observe that when Imam al-Husayn addressed Umar in this manner, Umar instinctively questioned who had taught him these words, expressing concern that it may have come from Imam Ali. We also find reports of Imam Ali distancing himself from the statement, indicating no direct involvement. This, in turn, suggests that the sons of Rasul-Allah ﷺ were themselves aware that the rights of their father had been usurped.

May Allah keep us loyal towards the truthful successors of Rasul-Allah ﷺ and keep us away from the Taghut.
