Part Two : Is this an unpopular opinion?
Part Three : The Marfoo’ Hadith and its authenticity
Welcome to our Blog! Sunni scholarship rejects attributing Shirk to Prophets, but we find in their books that Iblis deceived Prophet Adam into committing shirk, and Allah ﷻ criticized Adam for that in the Qur’an 7:189-190
Part One : In the Tafasir
Allah ﷻ says :
He is the One Who created you from a single soul, then from it made its spouse so he may find comfort in her. After he had been united with her, she carried a light burden that developed gradually. When it grew heavy, they prayed to Allah, their Lord, “If you grant us good offspring, we will certainly be grateful.”
But when He granted their descendants good offspring, they associated false gods in what He had given them. Exalted is Allah above what they associate ˹with Him˺!
~Surah al-A’raf 7:189-190

1) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari mentioned:
al-Qasim narrated from al-Husayn who narrated from Hajjaj that Ibn Jurayj narrated from Ibn Abbas who said :
When Adam’s first son was born, Iblis went to him and said, ‘I advise you to name him Abd al-Harith.’ Adam replied, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from obeying you.’ Then his son died. Ibn Abbas said Iblis’s name in heaven was al-Harith.
Then another son was born to him, and Iblis said, ‘Obey me, or he will die like the first,’ but Adam refused, and his son died again. Iblis said, ‘I will continue to kill them until you name him Abd al-Harith.’ Then Adam named him Abd al-Harith.
This is what the Ayah means : {But when He ﷻ gave them a healthy child, they committed Shirk} (Surah al-A’raf 190). Then the narrator added, ‘Adam did not associate anything with Allah, but he obeyed Iblis.’
~Tafsir al-Tabari vol 10:624-625

P.S.: All narrators are Thiqah. And every chain mentioned below is Sahih.
2) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari mentioned :
al-Qasim narrated from al-Husayn who narrated from Hajjaj that Ibn Jurayj narrated from Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr who said :
When Adam and Eve descended, desire was placed in him, and he had intercourse with her, and she conceived, and the child began to move in her womb.
She asked, ‘What is this?’ Then Iblis went to her and said, ‘Do you see on earth anything but camels, cows, sheep, and goats? The thing in your womb is one of those.’ She said, ‘By Allah, there is nothing in me that is not too small for this.’
Iblis said to her, ‘Then obey me and name him Abd al-Harith, and you will give birth to a human like you.’ She mentioned this to Adam, who said, ‘He is the one who caused our expulsion from Jannah,’ so they refused, and the baby died.
Then she became pregnant again, and Iblis went to her and said, ‘Obey me and name him Abd al-Harith, or else you will give birth to a camel, a cow, a sheep, or a goat, or I will kill him like I killed the first one.’ al-Harith was Iblis’s name among the angels.
She mentioned this to Adam, but it seemed he disapproved, so she named him Abd al-Harith. This is the meaning of the Ayah {But when He ﷻ gave them a healthy child, they committed Shirk}.
~Tafsir al-Tabari vol 10:621-622

3) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari mentioned :
Muhammad Ibn Amr narrated from Abu Aasim who narrated from Eesa on the authority of Abu Najih that Mujahid said :
The verse {But when He gave them a healthy child, they committed Shirk} explains the event that no child of Adam lived, so Iblis said to them, ‘If a child is born to you, name him Abd al-Harith.’ So they obeyed him.
~Tafsir al-Tabari vol 10:626

4) Abu Muhammad Makki Ibn Abi Talib al-Qurtubi mentioned :
al-Suddi said : When Eve gave birth to a boy, Iblis went to her and said, “Name him ‘my slave’ or I will kill him.” Adam said, ‘I obeyed you, and it expelled me from Jannah.’ So he refused and named the boy Abd al-Rahman. So Iblis overpowered the boy and killed him.
Eve conceived another child, and the same happened again, but Adam didn’t obey Iblis and named him Saleh. So, Allah gave Iblis power over him, and he killed the boy.
The third time Iblis said, ‘Since I have overpowered you, name him Abd al-Harith’ and Adam named him Abd al-Harith. Iblis was called al-Harith among the angels.
~al-Hidayah Ila Bulugh al-Nihayah vol 4:2677

5) Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi narrated :
Ali Ibn al-Husayn narrated from Muhammad Ibn Ali Ibn Hamza who narrated from Habban that Abd-Allah Ibn al-Mubarak narrated on the authority of Shaarik from Khusayf that Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr narrated :
That Ibn Abbas said regarding the verse {But when He ﷻ gave them a healthy child, they committed Shirk}, he said : When Adam had intercourse with Eve. Iblis came to them and said, ‘I am your companion who caused you to be expelled from Jannah. So obey me, or I will make the baby have the horns of a camel and it will tear her belly open, and I will do this and that.’
He threatened them to name the baby Abd al-Harith, but they refused, and the baby died. Then she became pregnant again, and Iblis came again and said the same. But they refused, and the baby died again.
Then she became pregnant the third time, and Iblis said the same, and the love for their child overpowered them, and they named him Abd al-Harith.
~Tafsir Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi vol 5:1634

• What has been said about the Tafsir of Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi; Asad Muhammad al-Tayb wrote in the introduction to this Tafsir :
Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi compiled in his Tafsir the sayings of the Salaf and selected the most authentic chains of narration
~Tafsir Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi vol 1:6

6) Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi mentioned :
This is the saying of Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr who narrated it from Ibn Abbas and Mu’mar narrated from Qatadah who said : Adam had no child born to him except that it died, so Iblis went to him and said, ‘If you want your child to live, then name him Abd al-Harith.’ and Adam did that, so they did Shirk in the name but not in worship.
~Tafsir al-Samarqandi vol 1:588

7) Abu al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned :
The scholars of Tafsir mentioned that Iblis went to Eve and said, ‘How do you know what is in your womb? Perhaps it is a dog, a pig or a donkey and it may tear your stomach or your mouth or your nostril while coming out.’
This saddened her, so they prayed to Allah. Then Iblis went to them and said, ‘If I pray to Allah and He makes it a human like you and Adam, will you name him after me?’ She agreed.
When she gave birth, Iblis went to her and said, ‘Why don’t you name it after me as you promised?’ She asked ‘What is your name?’ He said, ‘al-Harith.’ Iblis’s name among the angels was al-Harith. So she named him Abd al-Harith.
It is also said that she named a child Abd Shams with Adam’s permission. This is behind Allah’s revealing {But when He gave them a healthy child, they committed Shirk}
~Zaad al-Maseer fee Ilm al-Tafseer vol 1:534

8) Qadhi Thana-Allah Panipati wrote :
It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that Eve gave birth and Adam named them : Abd-Allah, Ubayd-Allah, and Abd al-Rahman, but they died. So they named a child Abd al-Harith, and he lived.
~al-Tafsir al-Mazhari vol 3:471

Part Two : Is this an unpopular opinion?
1) Hafidh Muhammad al-Iji’ al-Shafi’i al-Hasani wrote :
This report is Sahih from Ibn Abbas and was reported by many of the Salaf and Khalaf, but this isn’t truly Shirk because they didn’t believe al-Harith was their lord; rather, they believed he was the cause of their well-being. But Allah ﷻ called it Shirk to emphasize its severity.
~Tafsir al-Iji’ vol 1:680-681

2) Qadhi al-Shawkani wrote :
Most of the Mufassireen said : Iblis went to Eve and told her, ‘If you give birth to a child, name him after me, al-Harith.’ and if Iblis had revealed himself, she would have recognized him.
So she named her child Abd al-Harith. This was Shirk in name and not in worship.
~Fath al-Qadeer vol 2:313

3) Abu al-Hasan al-Wahidi mentioned :
Sa’eed Ibn Jubayr, al-Kalbi, and most of the Mufassireen mentioned this story of Abd al-Harith as the meaning of this Ayah (7:189-190)
~Tafsir al-Basit vol 9:513

4) Jalal al-Deen al-Suyuti mentioned :
Indeed, the Qur’an encompasses everything! There isn’t any fundamental principle that isn’t indicated in the Qur’an. It contains the accounts of the wonders of creation and important stories of the past, such as the story of Adam and Iblis in his expulsion from Jannah and the story of his son, Abd al-Harith.
~al-Iklil fee Istinbat al-Tanzil page 18

5) Abd al-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri wrote :
Most of the Mufassireen mentioned this. And it has been narrated through various chains from a group of Sahabah and those after them.
~Tuhfat al-Ahvadhi vol 8:365

Part Three : The Marfoo’ Hadith and its authenticity
1) Abu Eesa al-Tirmidhi narrated :
Muhammad Ibn al-Muthanna narrated from Abd al-Samad Ibn Abd al-Warith who narrated from Umar Ibn Ibrahim on the authority of Qatadah that al-Hasan al-Basri narrated from Samurah Ibn Jundub that
The Prophet ﷺ said : When Eve became pregnant, her children would not survive, so Iblis went to her and said, Name your child ‘Abd al-Harith.’ So, she named him that, and he lived. This was amongst the inspiration and commands of al-Shaytaan.
al-Tirmidhi said :
This Hadith is Hasan Gharib.
~Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3077

• This Sanad is Sahih, but there are two defects attributed to this chain: 1) al-Hasan al-Basri narrating from Samura Ibn Jundub is Mursal and, 2) Umar Ibn Ibrahim is criticized when he narrates from Qatadah; let us examine both the claims –
al-Hasan al-Basri narrating from Samura Ibn Jundub is Sahih, as al-Hasan had a writing of Samura from which he would dictate narration, as well as Ali Ibn al-Madini and others who said al-Hasan al-Basri met Samura Ibn Jundub :
Ali Ibn al-Madini said, ‘It is Sahih that al-Hasan al-Basri heard from Samurah Ibn Jundub.’ Some scholars of Hadith spoke about the narrations of al-Hasan from Samurah; they said he narrated from Samurah’s book.
~Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 1296

Secondly, the claim that Umar Ibn Ibrahim narrating from Qatadah is Munkar is somewhat true, as mentioned by Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani and his likes, but Umar Ibn Ibrahim is not alone in narrating this Hadith; we have another Sanad that does not have Umar Ibn Ibrahim or Qatadah in it. That was reported by Allamah Ibn Kathir :
Ibn Mardawayh narrated this Hadith from al-Mu’tamir on the authority of his father that al-Hasan al-Basri narrated from Samurah, tracing it back to the Prophet ﷺ
~Tafsir Ibn Kathir vol 3:475

al-Mu’tamir Ibn Sulayman and his father Sulayman Ibn Tarkhan al-Taymi are both Thiqah narrators and narrators of Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim; for example, check :
https://sunnah.com/muslim:1980d
2) al-Haakim al-Nishapuri commented on this Hadith and said :
This Hadith is Sahih in its chain, but they (Bukhari & Muslim) didn’t record it.
Allamah al-Dhabhi called it Sahih (صحيح) in the Talkhees.
~Mustadarak ala al-Sahihayn vol 2:594

Part Four : Conclusion
1) Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Najdi wrote :
Allah ﷻ said {When He ﷻ gave them a healthy child, they committed Shirk} (7:190)
Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi said : ‘The scholars agreed that all names with Abd other than for Allah are prohibited, like Abd Amr or Abd al-Ka’aba.’
Then he mentions the story of Adam and Abd al-Harith.
~Kitab al-Tawheed page 122

2) Sameh Strauch writes in the famous English version available online of Kitab al-Tawheed :
Allah ﷻ informs us in these verses that He created mankind from a single human being, Adam and that He created from him a wife, Hawwa’, in order that they might live together in peace and harmony and that He created in them the desire for sexual intercourse and made it permissible to them, in order that they might enjoy complete stability and repose and that their progeny might continue to multiply. And when she became pregnant, they both called upon Allah asking Him to give them a healthy, strong, righteous child and swearing that if He did so, they would be eternally be grateful to Him, But when Allah answered their supplications and gave them that which they had requested, they named him Abdul Harith, thus ascribing others as partners with Allah; and Allah is far above that which they attributed to Him.
~Kitab al-Tawheed page 285-286

3) Abd al-Rahman Ibn Hasan Ibn Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab wrote :
Ibn Abd al-Wahhab mentioned the scholarly consensus that naming anyone Abd followed by anything other than Allah is prohibited. It is Shirk in lordship and divinity.
~Fath al-Majeed Sharh Kitab al-Tawheed page 531

Thank you for reading! Hence, we conclude the Omari faction considers Nabi Abu al-Bashar Adam علیه السلام to be someone who committed Shirk, obeyed Iblis, went against the Shari’a, and preferred the life of this world.
