Imam Ali : Wali-Allah

Part One : Imam Ali’s Wilayah in the Qur’an

Part Two : His Wilayah in the Hadith and those who authenticated it.

Part Three : Abu Bakr claimed to be the Wali of Rasul-Allah

Welcome to our blog! In this article, we will demonstrate that Ali ibn Abi Talib was appointed as the Wali by Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ, thereby establishing him as the rightful successor to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Part One : Imam Ali’s Wilayah in the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ says in the Qur’an :

‘Your Wali is Allah & His Messenger and the one who believes, who establishes prayer and gives Zakat while bowing.’

~Surah al-Ma’idah 5:55

1) Allamah al-Suyuti said :

Abd al-Razzaq al-Sinani, Abd Ibn Hamid, Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Abu al-Shaykh, and Ibn Mardawyh narrated from Ibn Abbas regarding this verse, and he said, ‘It was revealed for Ali Ibn Abi Talib.’

~al-Durr al-Manthur vol 3:105

2) Allamah al-Suyuti said :

Ibn Jarir al-Tabari narrated from Mujahid (d.102 H) regarding this verse, and he said it was revealed for Ali Ibn Abi Talib when he gave charity in Rukoo’.

~Ebid (refer above)

3) Abu al-Hasan al-Wahidi wrote :

Ata’ ibn Abi Rabah (d.114 H) narrated that this ayah was intended for Ali Ibn Abi Talib.

~Tafsir al-Basit vol 7:435

4) Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi narrated :

Abd al-Malik Ibn Abi Sulayman asked Imam Abu Ja’far Muhammad al-Baqir (d.114 H) about the ayah, ‘Your Wali is Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe.’ I said it was revealed about Ali? He replied, ‘Ali is of those who believe.’

~Tafsir Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi vol 4:1162

5) Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi narrated :

Salamah Ibn Kuhayl (d.121 H) said Ali gave his ring in charity while he was in Rukoo’ then this ayah was revealed.

~Tafsir Ibn Abi Haatim al-Raazi vol 4:1162

6) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari narrated :

al-Suddi (d.127 H) said, “Then Allah informed us of who the Wali is: “Your Wali is Allah & His Messenger and the one who believes, who establishes prayer and gives Zakat while bowing.”‘

These are all the believers, but Ali Ibn Abi Talib was approached by a needy person while he was bowing in the Masjid, and he gave him his ring.

~Tafsir al-Tabari vol 8:530

7) Maqatil Ibn Sulayman (d.150 H) said :

And whoever takes Allah & His Messenger and those who believe as Wali—meaning Ali Ibn Abi Talib—then indeed, the party of Allah will be victorious—meaning the Shia’a of Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed are victorious.

~Tafsir Maqatil Ibn Sulayman vol 1:486

• Although Muqatil ibn Sulayman has been criticized by hadith scholars regarding narration, his tafsir nevertheless holds a significant and respected position among the early works of Qur’anic exegesis. Hafidh Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani mentioned :

Baqiyyah said Shubah Ibn al-Hajjaj never mentioned Maqatil except in goodness.

al-Shafi’i said, “People are dependent on Maqatil Ibn Sulayman for Tafsir.”

Nuaym Ibn Hammad said I saw a book of Maqatil with Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah so I asked him, ‘Do you narrate from him in Tafsir?”‘ He replied ‘No, but I use it as evidence and rely on it.’

~Tahdheeb al-Tahdheeb vol 4:143

8) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari narrated :

Utbah Ibn Abi Hakim (d.147 H) said this Ayah was for Ali Ibn Abi Talib.

~Tafsir al-Tabari vol 8:531

9) Abu Ja’far al-Tabari (d.310 H) said :

As for His ﷻ saying, ‘Those who believe, who establish prayer and give Zakat while they are bowing.’ The scholars differed as to whom it refers to. Some said it refers to Ali Ibn Abi Talib.

~Tafsir al-Tabari vol 8:530

10) Abu Mansour al-Maturidi (d.333 H) wrote :

Some scholars said this verse was revealed when the Prophet ﷺ went out and saw a poor man, so the Prophet ﷺ asked him, ‘Has anyone given you anything?’ He replied ‘Yes, O Rasul-Allah ﷺ, a silver ring.’

The Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘Who gave it to you?’ He pointed towards Ali, and then the Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘What was he doing?’ he replied, ‘He was in Rukoo.’ The Prophet ﷺ said Takbeer and praised Ali.

The Rawafidh use this verse as evidence of Ali’s superiority over Abu Bakr and to establish his succession. They say it was revealed for Ali because Abu Ja’far (Imam al-Baqir) said Ali Ibn Abi Talib gave his ring in charity in Rukoo’ then this verse was revealed.

~Tafsir al-Maturidi vol 3:544

11) Abu Bakr al-Jassas al-Hanafi (d.370 H) wrote :

It is narrated from Mujahid, al-Suddi, Abu Ja’far al-Baqir & Utbah Ibn Abi Haakim that this verse was revealed for Ali Ibn Abi Talib when he gave his ring in charity while in Rukoo’.

~Ahkam al-Qur’an vol 4:102

12) Hafidh al-Samarqandi (d.373 H) wrote:

Ibn Abbas said this Ayah was revealed when Bilal gave the Adhan and Rasul-Allah ﷺ came out and people were in the Masjid, some standing, some bowing, and some prostrating. He ﷺ saw a poor man, so He ﷺ asked him ‘Has anyone given you anything?’ He replied, ‘Yes, a silver ring.’

Then the Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘Who gave it to you?’ He replied ‘That man who was praying. ‘ He ﷺ asked ‘In what state did he gave it to you?’ He replied ‘He was in rukoo. The Prophet ﷺ looked, and the man was Ali Ibn Abi Talib.

~Tafsir al-Samarqandi vol 1:445

13) al-Thalabi (d.427 H) said :

And it is agreed upon that Ali Ibn Abi Talib gave his ring in Rukoo’.

~Tafsir al-Thalabi vol 2:396

14) Ibn al-Maghizali al-Maliki (d.483 H) narrated :

Ibn Abbas said a beggar who had a silver ring on his hand passed by Rasul-Allah ﷺ, so the Prophet ﷺ asked him, ‘Who gave you this?’ He replied, ‘That man who was in Rukoo’.

Then the Prophet ﷺ said, “Praised be Allah!” Who has kept this Ayah {Your Wali is Allah & His Messenger} in my family. That is because Ali gave his ring in charity.

~Manaqib Emir al-Mu’meeenin page 373

• According to Ibn al-Maghizali al-Maliki all narrations in their essence are Sahih in this book.

15) al-Ragheb al-Isfahani (d.502 H) wrote :

It is said this Ayah was revealed for Ali ع as he gave his ring in charity while he was in Rukoo’ and this proves that a small action in prayers doesn’t invalidate the prayer.

~Tafsir al-Ragheb al-Isfahani vol 4:383

16) Abu Hafs al-Nasafi al-Hanafi (d.537 H) wrote :

And His ﷻ saying {While they are in Rukoo’} means they are humble before Allah while praying and giving charity, and it was narrated that this verse was revealed for Ali ع when he gave his ring in charity while in Rukoo’.

~al-Tayseer fee al-Tafseer vol 5:421

The opponent argues that the verse {Your Wali is Allah & His Messenger and those who believe} indicates leadership of a specific individual. If this is established, then that Imam must be Ali.

The explanation is that a Wali is either a supporter or an administrator, and it cannot be interpreted only as a supporter because support is a general term and already indicated by other verses of the Qur’an.

The Wilayah mentioned in his verse is specific to some of the believers because the word {Innama} means exclusivity. If it cannot be interpreted as referring to Ali only as a supporter, then it must be referring to the one who has authority over the Ummah.

Hence, this verse establishes the Imamate of a specific person; all who affirm it say that the ayah was revealed for Ali Ibn Abi Talib because no one from the Ummah said that this Ayah refers to the Imamah of Abu Bakr or Abbas.

~Minhaj al-Sunnah vol 7:391

Let us refute Ibn Taymiyyah and quote the majority of Muhaditheen who authenticated this Hadith :

1) Ibn Abi Aasim narrated :

Ali is from me and I am from him and he is the Wali of every believer after me. It was narrated by al-Nisai’i & al-Tirmidhi and he said it is Hasan Gharib.

It is also narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad and its Sanad is upon the condition of Sahih Muslim.
